Summary: The Dark One Lightens Up
Comment: To those who have not read other books in this series: don't start with this one. Gregori is a complex character, and you should get to know him in other stories first. Otherwise, you'll come away with an incorrect view of the entire series, and especially the heroes.

I've read most of Christine Feehan's Dark series, and enjoy them. As some reviewers pointed out, she tended to repeat the same phrases in this book (molten mercury - for example). I had the feeling she used it as a generic description, intending to use the Replace command in her word processor to change most to other things - and either forgot or ran out of time. I'm willing to forgive her because Gregori is so compelling. I gave the book 4 stars because of this; otherwise it deserved all five.

Imagine yourself as Gregori: You've lived 1000 years alone. You're the most powerful of your race, a consummate healer - the first one to whom your people go for healing. They know you'll put your life at risk to save them, and that you'll passionately protect women and children. At the same time, you're the most ruthless dispenser of justice. The most isolated and feared.

You know if you turn vampire, there is no one who can destroy you. Not even the most ancient of your race realizes the depth of your power. You could destroy the world, and you are one step away from turning. Suddenly, you discover the Prince's lifemate is carrying a female child. Could you simply hope the daughter will become your lifemate-the only person who can save you from yourself and keep the world safe? Or would you do everything in your power to ensure she was?

Read Dark Desire to discover how Gregori assured Savannah belonged to him. Then read Dark Magic to see the final affect it has on his soul. Only the touch of his lifemate can keep him from becoming wholly evil, yet he gives her freedom from him, and from her fate, until he can resist the darkness no longer. If he does not join with her now, it will be forever too late not just for him, but for his people, and for the world of mankind. His first physical union with her is nothing short of brutal. He had gone so far into the darkness that she almost couldn't save him. This realization nearly destroys him. He believes himself a horrific monster. It's his pain that jolts Savannah into the reality of her world, and her place at Gregori's side.

His darkness vs her innocence makes this story great. Gregori has been my favorite character for some time. Learning that he would finally have a lifemate made me go out and hunt for this book.

I intend to own all of the Dark series. And in tribute to Ms Feehan, I'll be buying them new. I want to make sure she gets every penny she's so rightly earned.

Summary: My favorite of the series so far
Comment: Dark Magic is the fourth book in Christine Feehan's Dark Series. Gregori is the Dark One, the hunter, who is always alone. Thousands of years old, Gregori is on the verge of turning vampire. He is desperate to join with his lifemate, the only person who can stop his dark descent. All Carpathian males must find their lifemates to keep their darkness from taking over their minds. Failure to do so condemns them to life as vampires of legend unless they chose to end their existence and go into the sun. There is only one lifemate for each man and woman. Gregori's job is to hunt down these vampires and kill them. Now he is on the verge of becoming that which he hunts.

Daughter of the Carpathian prince and his human lifemate, Savannah Dubrinsky is desperately afraid of Gregori. She wants no part of being his lifemate. While she was in the womb, Gregori touched her, manipulating nature so she would be his lifemate and his salvation. He didn't count on her refusing him on her eighteenth birthday. He finally agrees to give her five years of freedom before coming for her. She runs away to America, thinking she can hide from him. She becomes a world famous magician and thinks she has escaped him and her Carpathian roots. Unfortunately for her, he knows exactly where she is as do other Carpathians who have already turned vampire.

Savanna has her hands full trying to convince Gregori she is not some weak woman who has to obey his every command. She is independent and wants to keep it that way. On the other hand, Gregori is used to giving orders and having them obeyed. What he doesn't count on is the way he wants to give in to her whims and the way his heart beats faster every time he looks at her. He believes he knows what's good for her and his first duty is to protect her, even if against herself. It was fun seeing a softer side of Gregori. The book moves to New Orleans, which is also fun. I recommend this whole series to lovers of romance. A word of warning: the series is very sexy :)

Summary: What a cool book!
Comment: This is the first Christine Feehan book I've read, and it is great! I don't want to repeat the story plotlines that were already described here, but if you like an intelligent writing style, really exciting scenes and an intriguing 'other world' to enter into, then get this book! Especially if you like the Lord of the Rings and even the Harry Potter books, this adds a whole new dimension (the romance side.) Borrow it, buy it, do whatever you need to do to read it. :) I'm not at all a romance novel reader, generally preferring the classics and even some of Oprah's picks, but I became a fan instantly. The characters are super, it kept me entertained and engrossed... Some reviewers griped about the whole 'old-fashioned' views held by the hero in the book, but for me, it only added to the sizzle. LOVED IT! Can't wait to read the rest of her books!!! PS: I'm so glad she changed the covers of the books... I have a tough time with those intolerable 'bare-chested Fabios with swooning women' covers that are so typical of romance novels. The current covers are so much cooler!!!
