Comment: Stevenson's _Humus Chemistry_ is THE source on soil organic matter (SOM), namely humic substances. It played an instrumental role as a reference in support of my masters thesis. I would recommend the book highly to anyone taking a course and/or with a serious interest in any aspect of SOM.
