Summary: A Collection of Quality Fiction
Comment: Although there are a few stories in this collection which I did not care for at all, the vast majority of them were fresh, exciting and thought-provoking. What is most interesting is that most of the authors whose stories appear here are not citizens of a Latin American country only, but have lived in and experienced cultures from around the world. One author, Anna Kazumi Stahl, is a German-Japanese who lives in Buenos Aires and writes in Spanish.

There are many gems here: Carlos Franz's "Circle," a beautiful and precise rendering of the cycle of life; Stahl's "Natural Disasters," Carmen Posadas' vibrant and wise story of "The Nubian Lover," wherein a woman and her ex-husband try to reconcile via a trip to Egypt; Javier Valdes' Stephen King-like "People Like Us," a chilling story of a pair of lovers and their lust for material gain. My favorite is Ernesto Mestre-Reed's "After Elian," a brilliant story about an old woman dying of cancer who refuses to give up the desire to live despite the humiliations she may suffer. All in all, a great collection to start exploring the many wonderful Latino authors currently at work contributing to the greater body of excellent world literature.
