Summary: A precursor to the blood trilogy
Comment: Another excellent story from Anne Bishop. The Invisible Ring is set during Dorthea's long reign and before Witch is born. There are a few visits from the sadist otherwise, it stands alone with it's own storyline and characters. Having read the Black Jewels trilogy will enhance your enjoyment of the story, but is not strictly necessary. Ms. Bishop, if you are listening we'd love more of Witch's saga. You left her barely alive. Surely you can squeeze out one more book about her and the lands recovery. Whatever you choose to write we'll look forward to enjoying it and, hopefully, many others.

Summary: a definate step down
Comment: While the Black Jewels trilogy is one of the greatest dark fantasy series around, it is clear that Anne Bishop has succombed to the sequel syndrome with this new addition to the Black Jewels universe.
In the previous trilogy, you had multi-layer plots, three dimensional characters, subtle hints, dark and disturbing writing, mesmerizing individuals. In this new book, the plot plods along, nothing is subtle; what little bit is presented subtly is then blatantly spelled out, the characters - which are sadly uninteresting - are only one or two dimensional, the writing seems forced.
While going back to the time of the "Grey Lady" and seeing how she solved the problem of separating "the blood from the blood", was a great premise, it was poorly executed. Even the few scenes with Daemon Sadi don't add to the mystery. Instead, it takes one of the greatest and most fascinating individuals and actually detracts from all the character build up made in the first three books.
In the future, and I sincerely hope that Anne Bishop chooses to write more books - and more books set in this universe, I will read the books from the library before deciding to actually spend money on them. I wish I had with this one. Definitely worth reading, not worth buying.

Summary: Mediocre Prequel to the Black Jewels Triology
Comment: The Invisible Ring falls short of the Black Jewels Triology, the series to which this book is a prequel. The characters are not as three dimensional and vibrant as the characters in the Black Jewels Triology. However, they are not flat either. I would reccommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Anne Bishops other novels, but would reccomend anyone who is new to Bishop to first read the Black Jewels Triology as it is by far her best series and most fantastic work.
The advantages to reading The Invisible Ring is that you get more of a background on Dameon Sadi an important character in the Black Jewels Triology. You see what he suffered while enslaved, and how he managed to circumvent the system. This books is a good read, it just falls short when compared to the Triology that it is supposed to precede.
