Summary: Impressive debut
Comment: "Good Peoples" by Marcus Major is an impressive debut. The story includes all the ingredients of a great read: romance, humor, insight, vivid and memorable characters, and strong writing. The main character Myles is a schoolteacher who's been unlucky in love; that is, until he meets the sultry Marisa who promptly knocks him off his feet. You will enjoy how the writer develops the relationship between Myles and Marisa, the ups and downs of their relationship, and you'll be trembling near the end as you wait to see if their love can withstand certain issues. There's some laugh out loud scenes in the book, some endearing moments with Myles, and some interesting observations from the outspoken brother Amir. Don't want to tell it all, just want to say it is a good book, and is highly recommended.

Summary: Great Read!
Comment: The best read I have had in a very long time. Once I got started, I could not stop.
Finally, a story that I can relate with. Plus, strong, AND sucessful characters also. So much African American fiction nowadays has "doggish" male characters, and "gold-digging females.
Yes, it was your typical love found, love lost story. But Marcus Major added depth, dimension, and flavor to the story and characters. It was nice to read about a couple confused about love issues. But get this, with all the confusion between Myles, and Marrisa, they handled it in a mature fashion. This alone is different from the norm. Shows you how Marcus Major held true to the story, and to himself. If you read this, you can't help but pick up on this.
GREAT main, and supporting characters. REAL feelings that are found in any REAL relationship. Overall, just a TRUE romance.
A breath of fresh air. Recommend to anyone. Can't wait for Marcus Major's second effort.

Summary: A good start -- better the second time around...
Comment: I just finished reading "Good Peoples" for the second time. I am glad I read Mr. Major's books in the order that I did, and not in the order they were written. Otherwise, I may not have given "Kenya and Amir" and "4 Guys and Trouble" a chance. That would have been a shame, as both stories were beyond excellent.
It wasn't until the second go around that I could appreciate how well the story of Myles and Marissa was laid out. After the first read, all I wanted to do was slap Myles and Marissa upside the head. I think it was the main characters that kept me from truly enjoying the book. Maybe its because I have known guys like Myles: sweet, affectionate, loving, willing to do all they can for their women. And yes, they are young-acting. Which is a part of their charm. Yet, they always end up with women like Marissa. Women who run them. Women who play hard-to-get with their feelings. The interesting thing is, the moment the women starts shifting her behavior and becoming more like her man, the man takes off for the next woman that will run him.
But enough about that...back to the book. As I said before, the story was well-laid out. The first meeting was funny and memorable. The pace of the relationship was realistic. Events didn't happen too fast. And the ending was plausible. The characters were well drawn out. As much as Myles and Marissa ticked me off, I could see where they were coming from. The twins were adorable enough that I almost wanted some of my own. I felt like I was in on a secret as Amir spouted "truth" after "truth" because I had already read "Kenya and Amir." I would like to read more on Carlos and Jackie (hint, hint.) Mr. Major obviously grew up around Latinos, and studied them well, so I would like to see what he could do with a story where the main characters were Latino. Brian served his purpose.
As always, Mr. Major sprinkled in a good mix of comedy to go along with the drama, and enough romance and banality to make it seem as if the reader was truly getting a glimpse of the whole life of each of the main characters. This novel was better the second time around, and it was truly worth the time.
