Summary: A compelling account about both the 1970s and family murder.
Comment: The murders of Jim and Naomi Olive during the summer of 1975 have taken a back seat in our collective unconscious to such well-publicized crimes as the Manson killings, the Jeffrey MacDonald case, and the Menendez brothers trial. However, the Olives' case is at least as compelling as the aforementioned crimes due to the fact that they were committed by Chuck Riley, a 20-year-old ne'er do well who was obsessed with 16-year-old Marlene Olive (who just happened to be the daughter of the slain couple). Richard M. Levine wrote Bad Blood back in 1982 and he wrote it well, constructing the crime from Chuck's hypnotic recall as well as interviews with friends, relatives, lawyers, teachers, and Marlene herself. Not only is it a compelling story of a crime in the making, it serves as an incisive sociological study of just what it was like to be a teenager in California in the mid-1970s: the drugs, the parties, the fighting with your parents, the feeling that life can be confusing and boring. I heartily recommend this book!

Summary: one of the best and most shocking books i have read
Comment: i first read this book a long time ago after lending it from my local library .
It took me a long time to find a copy of my own (i wasn't on the net then)
It is one of the best true crime stories ever
Marlene Olive was truly manipulating and would have chuck running in circles .
Once i pick up this book i'm unable to put it down until i've read it from cover to cover .
Ive read it many times and i think you will too ,and like me ,you'll probably be itching to know where Marlene and Chuck are now

Summary: This book haunted me
Comment: I read this book back in the eighties and was shocked then by these teens behavior--the no holds sex, drugs, and out of bounds behavior. I just got this book again because it stayed in the back of my mind. It is amazing how fast a girl raised in a strict environment could change into a bad american teenager. She helps in the murder of her parents because they are getting in her way. Richard Levine describes her actions amazingly well, where you see her and her boyfriend's coldness and callous behavior, but gets you also feeling a strange empathy for those two. This is the only true crime book I read where I've felt that blend of feelings. Truely awesome.
