Summary: another solid work from Welfonder
Comment: This is another very marvelous read from Sue-Ellen Welfonder. Her love of the Highlands of Scotland is clear in her writing, as is her dedication to getting historical and location details correct.
Madeline Drummond is gifted with paranormal talent; Ian McLean is curse with one.
Madeline has "The Sight" and sees events to come. Most importantly, she sees a "Shadow man", a man she knows she is destined to love and will love her in return. She was the daughter of a rich Highland Chief, so many men came to call, asking for her hand in marriage. But Madeline was not flattered, because none of them cared for HER - just the lands, titles and money marriage to her would help them again. She wanted to be loved for herself.
Ian MacLean is a wounded animal, cursed to love only one woman in his lifetime. The MacLean Bane is their males knew instantly when they saw they women they were fated to love, and would love only her until the day they died. Only, Ian never "felt" this. Not with his first wife. He was married and his wife murdered, leaving him a bitter man, lashing out at all that dared take his wife from him.
Madeline is on a quest for vengeance, dressed as a nun, she is traveling with her maid, bent on bringing a murderous villain to justice. She has lost her fortune and her ancestral home, but more importantly, she lost her father and she now means to see his murder is held to account.
Ian has offended his Clan by a yearlong rampage stemming from his fury of the murder of his wife. In order for him to find peace, he is commanded to go on a quest and to carry Holy Relics for donating to the Church. His family hopes the time away and the penance will help Ian find his heart and soul again.
However, a strange thing happens when Ian and Madeline meet by accident in a small church. Madeline recognizes Ian as her "shadow man" the man fated to love her, the one she has long awaited for, and Ian - never touched by the MacLean Bane - suddenly looks into her eyes and knows she is the one woman he will always love. Madeline flees because this could not be the worst time for her "shadow man" to appear. She, to his eyes, is a nun! Ian is not thrilled with the notice either!
Ian and Madeline must find each other, unite under the guise of pretending to be man and wife, in order to see justice done for both of the wrongs done to them in life.
Welfonder writes with style, passion, and a clear devotion. The pace is a wee bit slow in the first 75 pages, but the book keeps you absorbed to the very end. I highly recommend it for those who love love Scottish Historicals.
It's a great tale, but one bone I have to pick - AND IT'S NOT HER FAULT. Warners, her publisher, needs to permit her to pick her own titles and stop packaging them such an indifference fashion. Her writing creates a quality historical works, but then they package it with silly titles and bad tag lines that insult the readers intelligence like: "He was the lord of the land, but a slave to one woman's passion..." OH, PLEASE! He was NOT the lord of the land - no one was LORD OF THE HIGHLANDS. That is shoddy on Warner's part, Again, the title implies this - and HE IS NOT.
So, Warner...you have a talented writer that cares about the subject she is writing about - STOP TURNING OFF READERS with indifferent and STUPID packaging. Shame on Warners. Let her pick her OWN TITLES! So, Ignore Warner's packaging
and treat yourself to a fine Historical. The old saying of never judge a book by it's cover - it dead bang on target here!

Summary: A TRUE 10 STAR BOOK & SERIES
Comment: Ms Welfonder is really a truly gifted author. I predicted with
her first book that she would be an author to watch and she has
not disappointed me. Have read all of her books so far and I am
anxiously awaiting her next one to come out. If anyone likes
Scottish books then buy one of her books and you won't be
disappointed. I will buy all of her books.
