Summary: Not Your Usual Trip to South America
Comment: The not-so-incredible billionaire wants the largest meteorite ever found transported from an island off Tierra del Fuego to his state of the art natural history museum in New York. The first thing you have to wrap your mind around is the incredible estimated weight (10,000 tons) of the meteorite. The second is the proximity of Tierra del Fuego to Antarctica. I was grateful for the map, because I had difficulty grasping the idea that where they were going is very cold indeed!
Preston and Child deliver on this thriller. The characters are three dimensional, particularly the billionaire. The engineering feats are well written for the laymen. The storm at sea is stupendous; you have a true feeling of doom at your doorstep.
However, I subtracted two stars. The first because the book is a slow starter. It took 150 pages to set up the story. The second star is withheld because of the ending, which is reminiscent of a '50's horror movie. I wanted to say 'oh puh-leeze!' These two faults are not a major deterrent; it's 60% fine entertainment.

Summary: NEVER FAILS TO PLEASE
Comment: How can I say it. These guys are Brain Candy to the Nth degree. I have read everything these guys have ever written and I think this is one of the best to date. I loved the adventure, mixed with the technical explainations. These guys, have a formula that works and are smart not to ruin a good thing by staying on the mark. These guys always have a story where you have to read on to see what the hell the mystery is, then how will they solve it. Listen people this book is great, what more can I tell you. Unless you find traveling down to the tip of South America, digging up a meteor weighing as much as 5 Efial Towers, that harnesses a power that can't be explained, while being chased down by a rouge sea captain armed with a destroyer, against the back drop of the Antartic Ocean's black icy waters BORING. If that is the case then Shock treatment must also be boring to you.

Summary: Anti-Climatic, Lame, and Disappointing
Comment: This is my second novel by these authors. The first one that I read was the "Cabinet of Curiosities" and I *loved* it so much! I just thought it was such a great read; I loved the story, the characters, the historical influence and the style of writing.
Although, the style of writing and character development in "The Ice Limit" is excellent; the story does contain the same high quality. The storyline is very weak and does not have a lot of substance. Basically, it is the story of a group of scientists and engineers hired by a multi-billionaire collector to sail to Chile and retrieve a meteorite from the country for the billionaire's collection. The whole of the novel is spent studying the characters and relaying their efforts to retrieve this collossal rock without letting the Chilean authorities know. That is seriously the bulk of the story.
The only element that I felt could redeem the book was the mystery of the meteorite's origin. One scientist believes that it might be an interstellar meteorite. This would be an amazing discovery since scientists commonly hold a meteorite from another galaxy would not break through our atmosphere intact. However, this mystery does not develop significantly in the story. In the very end the true source of the meteorite is revealed, but I did not "get it". I was more confused than ever and felt it was the worst ending of a book I have ever read. It was so anti-climatic.
It was a real effort to get through the book and I felt that the ending was a poor reward for my patience.
I would not recommend this book to anyone :((
