Summary: The 500-Pound Gorilla at Hollywood's Court
Comment: This recounts how a ...twenty-something created one of the most influential entertainment news websites in the world, and ended up on the radar of Hollywood's power elite.
For those in search of a rollicking read, this is not it. It's part autobiography but it's also a loose collection of rants. The truly interesting information is buried toward the end of the book.
Would-be movie moguls and screenwriters should skip the first nine chapters. Chapter 10 describes everything wrong with big production movies. It uses Batman and Robin as a case study, where toy manufacturers demanded costume design changes and a new Batmobile for the film.
For a breakdown of the Hollywood power structure, check out Chapter Eleven: 'Everyone is allowed to speak directly only to the person just above or below them, and everyone puts up with this in anticipation of the day when they'll all move up a notch''
How do studios test films before release? Knowles picks apart the National Research Group in Chapter 14, which conducts audience testing: 'Audiences are routinely recruited from malls, probably the single most homogenized place in our culture.' It's a fascinating angle on the movie industry not widely documented.
Are you a smart person waiting for a smart film? Maybe you're part of the huge, untapped audience for whom movies are not being made, according to Knowles. Check out his film geek manifesto in Chapter 18.
Would-be sci-fi and fantasy screenwriters looking to brainstorm new ideas might find his listing of unproduced movies interesting. Check out Appendix C for his list.
Knowles does tend to ramble and his writing is at times overly lofty. Case in point: 'Maybe I'll go really bad, destroyed by the same inexorable powers and forces I sense whizzing around me even now, in these last few vital seconds before they crush in too close.' Yipes.
It's not for everyone. But students of the film trade planning their assault on Hollywood might find some buried treasure here.

Summary: A reply to Mr. Reece...
Comment: It's never been proven that Harry can write a book, since he didn't write this one. As far as the actual writing IN the book, it's a mostly average effort by ghostwriters paid to interpret Harry's nonsensical perspective. In that, they pretty much succeed. His inanity and delusional self-importance come shining through on every page. If Harry actually believes that he's revolutionary (and unbiased) when compared to the likes of Matt Drudge, I want whatever he's smokin'! Again, I encourage anyone who's not familiar with the AICN website to go there and simply read his movie reviews and his "insider information", which is neither unique nor timely. The man has no knowledge of films or film history that an average Joe couldn't obtain in 10 minutes at the library.
Harry Knowles is not a Hollywood "outsider" in any sense of the word. He was bought and paid for long ago, and the studios continue to tolerate and humor him in order to placate an anonymous, highly vocal gaggle of geeks who create the underground buzz that's fashionable right now. What little influence he may have had has waned since the introduction of websites such as CHUD.
If you'd like some REALLY interesting reading, take a look at the first customer reviews that were clearly planted at the time the book came out, and then contrast them to the real customer reviews later. That'll tell you everything you need to know about this disingenuous hack.

Summary: Knowles Can Write
Comment: I'd like to express an observation of many of the reviews posted here stating that Knowles cannot write. Now, I'll admit I haven't read this book, however, I've read the few pages provided here for review. I dare anyone to read these pages and find fault with the writing; it's fine! So, where are these people coming from that state Knowles can't write; do they have hidden agendas, might they have a grudge against Knowles?
