Summary: Great retelling of a classic
Comment: Out of all the fairy tales ever written, Sleeping Beauty has always been my favorite. I always thought it so romantic that a beautiful princess would fall into a deep sleep only to be awakened by her true love. Now this classic tale is being retold by New York Times Bestselling Author Robin McKinley in "Spindle's End". In this story our heroine is called Rosie. When she is only months old, a curse is put upon her by the evil fairy Pernicia. The curse says that on the princess's 21st birthday she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die. For her safety she is given to a country girl named Katriona to raise. Katriona takes Rosie far away from the castle to a small country village where, with the help of Katriona's Aunt, she is raised as Katriona's cousin. It's interesting to watch Rosie grow up in a setting unbefit a princess. It's also great to see the interaction between Rosie and the animals she encounters. You see, on Rosie's naming-day (the same day she was cursed), Katriona cast a spell giving Rosie the power to talk to animals. This of course will turn out to be a very useful tool through Rosie's life, especially the moment she faces Pernicia. Now don't assume you know the ending to this story because you've seen or read the more traditional adaptations of it. Of course I'm not going to sit here and tell you how the story ends: if Rosie pricks her finger, if her true love awakens her with a kiss, or if everyone lives happily ever after. I do suggest that you go buy this book if, like me, you love fairy tales with a good old fashioned twist. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I think you'll do the same.

Summary: No one does fairy tales better than McKinley!
Comment: If you've read McKinley's Beauty, than you're already familiar with her ability to create the most wonderful characters with her lyrical prose. As in Beauty, the heroine in Spindle's End is a completely drawn character whose courage, intelligence, kindness and humor deviate from the stereotypical pretty princess with nothing to do but be rescued. The story is magical, the supporting characters (especially the wonderful animals) make you wish you knew them yourself and the plot keeps you engrossed throughout the novel. McKinley has an amazing talent to take what is old and make it fresh without abadoning the traditional tale entirely. Unlike Deerskin (which is another fabulous and somewhat misunderstood McKinley piece,) Spindle's End can be enjoyed by all ages. Her writing is colorful and inventive without being wordy or dense. The author's spin on the wake-up kiss and the happily-ever after-ending may not be standard, but they are satisfying. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Parents - read it with your child...you'll both enjoy it (and you can help them out with some of the bigger words.) If you enjoy Jane Yolen or Patricia McKillip, you'll definitely like McKinley.

Summary: Loved it!
Comment: I just had to get Spindle's End...I love retellings of fairy-tales and I love Robin McKinley. I loved her descriptions of the magic, baby magic and so on. My favorite parts are Katriona's travel to the princess's naming ceremony and when Rosie meets Peony...I also love the end! As in most of McKinley's books, there is always a confusing part - at least to me. The part where Rosie and her animal friends go up to defeat the evil fairy was really odd...and I had to reread parts of it before I (sort of) understood it. I loved how she had the animals talk and have personalities...and I really liked McKinley's take on the fairy tale.
