Summary: Magnificent intro to one of history's most powerful women
Comment: I first read this book at least 15 years ago and have never forgotten it. This book and The Daughter of Time launched my ongoing love affair with British history. After reading this book, I was so inspired that I dressed as Eleanor of Aquitaine for Halloween; I was shocked and astonished to discover that she was far from a household name and I spent my entire evening of trick-or-treating explaining my costume. If more books for children were as historically accurate and entertaining as is Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver, I think more people would have recognized and appreciated my costume. E.L. Konigsburg writes some of the best children's books I've ever read and they stand the test of time- I enjoy reading them now as much as I did then. By writing about an often ignored yet fascinating woman, Konisburg opened my eyes to a range of historical characters usually excluded in traditional history books. I highly recommend this book for any child, but especially for young girls who are looking for more female characters to shape their understanding of world history.

Summary: An OK Book
Comment: This book was very dissapointing for me. It was awful and I did not enjoy reading. Instead my class was forced to read it together. The only reason why I did give it 2 stars was because I liked the part in the end about how they don't know what an american is or what a president is when they meet abraham lincoln up in heaven!

Rating: 4
Summary: I like everything but the title
Comment: Eleanor of Aquitaine is in heaven, waiting patiently (???) for her second husband, Henry the Second of England, to come up. She and some others bide the time by telling their stories, with quite different interpretations of the same exciting, volatile events.

Brings the lovely, stubborn, shrewd Eleanor of Aquitaine to life, and gives a human side to good ol' Thomas Becket. I like the characterizations of the Abbott and of Henry, and the sensible form heaven takes.

I don't think a pragmatic woman like Eleanor would still be so passionately attached to a jackass like Henry after he imprisoned her for much of her life--(although she did outlive him so had her revenge, and I can see that Ms. Konigsburg has a right to an educated guess that she would be).

I enjoyed the book very much, but one star gets deducted for the silly, obscure title. What the heck is scarlet? What the heck is miniver? What the redundancy does a taste for same have to do, except peripherally, with what was going on in this book? How about "Waiting for Henry" or "Tales of Afterlife's Anteroom"?

A more evocative title would fit better and would call more attention to a great read.
