Comment: Jump Ship to Freedom
Daniel Arabus raced across the dock with Big Tom a hairsbreadth behind him. He had to make it to Samuel's Tavern, he just had to. If Big Tom caught him he would be brought back to Captain Ivers, tied to the Junius Bruntus' mainmast (which was Captain Ivers' ship), whipped, and sold to the Cane Fields in the South. Big Tom grabbed Daniel's shirt, and Daniel knew he had only one choice'he jumped into the water. Would he make it, or would Big Tom catch him?
Hi... I just read Jump Ship to Freedom by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier.
Daniel Arabus was a 14 year-old slave for a horrible master named Captain Ivers. Captain Ivers takes Daniel on the Junius Bruntus (which is something Daniel has always to do), but taking Daniel on the Junius Bruntus is a trick! Captain Ivers really is taking Daniel to the South to be sold to the Cane Fields instead of New York, where Daniel thought they were going! Will Daniel escape, or will Captain Ivers sell him to the Cane Fields?
I feel I'm sort of like Daniel in a way (but thankfully, I'm not a slave!) because I'm courageous, strong-willed, and a little stubborn! I strongly liked this book because it didn't have much cursing, was pretty interesting, and had some old history in it. My favorite part in Jump Ship to Freedom was when Daniel made a small fire in Captain Ivers' quarters and ran out of the room screaming that there was a huge fire and jumped of the Junius Bruntus to the New York harbor. One important thing this book lacked though was humor. I've only read two or three parts that were funny. I think that Jump Ship to Freedom is for 4-6 grade readers because it's a long read, has mild violence, and blood.
Daniel was traveling with an elderly Quaker when he saw it. The Quaker needed a doctor badly and Daniel went into a Tavern to get one, and when he talked to the keeper to ask for a doctor he noticed a man hammering a poster to the wall. Daniel looked closer, and he saw it was a wanted poster'of him! Captain Ivers was onto him. Daniel started to run up the stairs'

Comment: Have you ever been a slave on a boat about to sell you to the West Indies? I read a book called Jump Ship to Freedom about a slave named Daniel .He is a hard working slave who is always getting into trouble. This book is written by James Collier and Christopher Collier.
This book is about a slave named Daniel. He has an adventurous personality and always is getting into trouble. When Daniel is about to find out he's going to be sold to the West Indies, he tricks the crew and jumps into the New York Harbor. It turns into the nastiest chase ever! Daniel tries to run away from his tyrant master, but he always ends up finding him.
I think Daniel is my favorite character, because he is ready to do anything and he is very brave. I think it is good for everyone to be this way.
I recommend this book to anyone 10 and over looking for a great adventure because it is a very fast moving book and there is a lot of cliff hanging suspense.

Comment: Have you ever imagined being a slave and being whipped for hardly any reason?
In this book there is a young slave boy named Daniel Arabus. His owner Captain Ivers mistreats him all the time. Then Captain Ivers takes Daniel aboard his ship. There is only one thing Daniel has on his mind, the soldier notes. Those are the notes that could buy Daniel and his mom out of slavery.
The boat made a quick stop at New York, and Daniel was surprised to find the person he had wanted to talk to for so long, Black Sam Fraunces. On Daniel's boat journey, he meets some unexpected people (like Black Sam Fraunces) who might be able to help him.
I didn't really enjoy this book, but I am not saying you wouldn't. If you like books about African American slaves, then you would surely enjoy this book. I think it is horrible that all of the slaves didn't have their own rights. Why shouldn't a person have the right to speak their mind or walk in the front door of a store?
Will Daniel make his way out of slavery or will he forever be held as a slave? Read this book to find out.
