Summary: I'm Giving Away My Copy of "Dark Highlander" for a Penny!
Comment: I absolutely loved everything about "Kiss of the Highlander" and I couldn't wait to buy the sequel with Daegus' dark and dangerous adventure.
But when I actually got it...beware, spoilers ahead:
Chloe's character bored and annoyed me throughout the novel. Her attitude basically stunk (cynicism, distrust and more than a little insecurity), and it showed in most of her dialogue/thought scenes with Daegus. And because of that elephant-sized chip on her shoulder she was emotionally blind for most of the book and didn't see that Daegus had deep feelings for her, and it was very obvious (to us, anyway) that he had fallen HARD (and I still fail to see why). That is, until around a quarter before the end of the book when she suddenly realizes that she loved him (gasp of surprise).
I also didn't like the constant bribing that Daegus had to do in order to get Chloe to help him, go with him to Scotland, for her to do anything for him. It's as if she should have worn a sign saying "will sell self for ancient Celt relics." Maybe she should have asked for a better personality in the deal...
I did see a few minor similarities between Chloe and Gwen from "Kiss of the Highlander," but I infinitely preferred Gwen to this novel's cookie-cutter heroine. I can't help but chuckle over the teaser lines on the back cover, "she will soon face the challenge of a lifetime: fighting thirteen evil spirits for the heart of one irresistable man..." Chloe didn't fight for anything in this book (except maybe that would-be assassin), and especially not for Daegus' heart. She just coasted along, thinking "all he wants is to take me to bed, blah blah..."
Daegus was ultra-sexy, noble, passionate and the only reason that I continued reading the book to the end was because I wanted to know what would happen to HIM. Ah, those lion-gold eyes...and that scene on the airplane! My God! I would gladly use up ALL of my frequent flyer miles if I could sit next to him!
An interesting point was made by another reviewer about the 13 dark spirits, and I have to agree. They didn't DO anything! Everyone in the book was talking about how evil and dangerous they were, but all they did really was change the color of Daegus' eyes! BOO! And another point was made about the use of magic; Drustan was able to use all kinds of magic in "Kiss," so why not Daegus too? He only used a handful of spells in the book, and they didn't seem "dangerous" enough to make his soul turn dark by casting them.
I wanted to know more about that secret society, but there were only a handful of scenes (or vignettes even) that had the bad guys in it. I was shocked when that guy jumped out of the window after a failed attempt to kill Chloe (too bad that he didn't succeed), and I wanted to know what drove the whole organization. It just wasn't explained to my satisfaction.
In the "Highlander" series of novels, I've only read this one and "Kiss," so I was completely thrown off by the references to Adam Black.
The sex was sizzlingly erotic in this book, but unlike "Kiss" it didn't have much chemistry involved between the two main characters. It's hot stuff, but it's almost like sex for it's own sake.
I'm not trying to sound harsh, but that's how I thought of the book after the first reading. And I even read it a second time to see if I would feel the same; there was no improvement.

Summary: great romantic fantasy
Comment: Druid mage Daegus MacKeltar used his powers to travel back in time to save the life of his twin brother Drustan (see TO KISS A HIGHLANDER). However, Daegus pays a high price for his good deed as he released the spirits of thirteen evil Druids that share residency with him in his body. Desperate to re-incarcerate these malevolent beings, Daegus steals ancient Celtic texts in search of the spell that will do this. The Manhattan press dubs the thief the "Gaulish Ghost".
Medieval expert Chloe Zanders is shocked to learn that a curator of the Cloisters collection wants her to deliver a five century old reprint of the third book of Mannannan to some private collector who has provided artifact donations in exchange for reading the text. A wary Chloe delivers the book to Daegus, who recognizes his soul mate has arrived. Holding her prisoner, Daegus and Chloe travel to Scotland where he hopes to free his soul by imprisoning the Druids and to persuade her that they belong together through time and space.
This sequel is a great romantic fantasy that should provide Karen Marie Moning with a loyal cross genre audience awaiting her next book. The story line is action-packed, filled with tension, and never slows down even when the lead heroes debate their fate and attraction. The good vs. evil battle will hook fantasy readers with its feel of authenticity even with magic, incantations, and otherworldly demons. Ms. Moning seems heading to the read realm of greatness with THE DARK HIGHLANDER proving she is one of the best writers on the market today.
