Summary: Powerful true tale of childhood abuse in post war Shanghai
Comment: Totally captivating, simply written.A study in bravery and strength of character of a sort unknown to me as a child.Despite the wealth of her Shanghai family Dr Mah vividly describes a life ofbeing ignored, routinely ill-treated almost constantly between the ages of four and fourteen.I kept asking how parents with any heart at all could treat a courageous small child so cruelly.(Forgetting to pick her up from school on her first day in first grade? Beating her until her nose bled because school friends came to her home? Not attending any of her school prize days?) I bought this book at Hong Kong airport last Monday and read it three times through between there and New York.I kept turning back to the haunting face of the eight year old Adeline on the paperback cover.I repeatedly found tears rolling down my cheeks not just out of pity but in appreciation of her strength and resillience. Many adult Americans would still be spending time with a psychotherapist and blaming their failures on this type of childhood. In Adeline Mah's case it gave her a strength and determination I must say I envy. She may still be suffering but I found this book inspirational.

Summary: A Girl Who Found Herself
Comment: A Chinese Cinderella was a great book. Yen Jun-Ling (Adeline Yen) has a very courageous story to tell. Adeline starts off as a Kindergartiner who has won a medal and the only way in making her father notice her is to bring pride to her family such as good grades and awards. She has to get good grades because she has been shunned from her family. When she was her born her mother had gotten a high fever and dies two weeks later. Everybody treats her unequally, especially her father. Her father has ignored all five of his children ever since he married a half French and half Chinese woman. They soon have two kids together and her father treats his stepchildren better than his biological children. This novel is about a girl's journey through life and how she came to get her father to see her as "his daughter."

Summary: A MUST READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Comment: I have to admit when I was first introduced to this book I wanted to put it back down because it looked liked a children's book and I NEVER have liked getting involved with the melodrama of the teenage worlds. But once I started reading I could not put it down until I had read it cover to cover. It touched me so deeply I found myself crying for her sorrow and suffering. A reader doesn't necessarily have to be going through the anguish that she went through in order to relate. Its theme is universal and I can now see why some schools are listing this book as required reading: because they might have been like me pondering weather or not to read it or not and wind up missing out one of the best stories I have read in a long time. It is so riveting that at times I forget that this is a true story. Now after reading this tale I appreciate my family more than ever before!!!!!!!!
