Summary: Read this book
Comment: I think Soldiers Heart is one of the best Civil War books that I have ever read. It's about a 15 year old boy named Charley who joins the Minnesota Volunteers. Charley is in four major battles in the war. He loves how the girls give him sweets, but he's not ready for what happens in the battle. This book is great for a class that is learning about the Civil War. Gary Paulsen, the author, gives about every detail. I hope you read this book because it is very exciting.

Summary: ONE OF THE BEST CIVIL WAR FICTION BOOKS I HAVE READ!
Comment: Soldier's Heart is an engrossing tale of the Civil War as seen through the eyes of the young hero of the book. Charley is a fifteen year old boy who longs for the excitement of the war and so he lies about his age and enlists in the Union Army. He is not prepared for the horror he experiences or with the reality of war. The author does a good job of letting the reader see and feel what the character experiences as he goes from situation to situation I think this book would be a good one to use in class when studying the Civil War. It really brings home the realism of the Civil War. Mr. Paulsen's details are wonderful, even the slang words of the time are included without being overdone. I was surprised to find also that this story was based on the life of a real Union soldier. I highly reccomend this book, especially to middle school students and to teachers who teach about the Civil War.

Summary: Mike's REVIEW
Comment: I listened to this book in an hour and a half. It seemed much shorter, as it was packed with action and interesting things. It is the story of a young 15 year-old boy named Charlie as he fights in the Civil War. He is in the Minnesoata regiment, along with about a thousand others. He lies about his age in order to get into the Union Army. At first it is luxurious trains, and wonderful prades, with girls giving them candy. But then they begin to enter combat. In the first battle he is in(Bull Run) he freezes up and does not fire at the enemy at first. Eventually the retyreat from the meadow. Charlie pees himself as they cross the meadow only to find that the confederate army has left. The entire book he faces internal conflict about leaving the army, and external conflict against the confederate army, and the ferocious elements. In the next battle Charlie kills many people and is covered in their blood. His commander sent him for medical help, while there he and another man build a wall of dead bodies to prevent the rough winds from hitting the wounded. Then the final battle discoussed in this piece of literature is the Battle Of Ghettysberg. This was a the battle with the highest number of casulties in the entire war. In this battle Charlie is involved in one final charge that would decide the war... would he live, would he die, would he be shot, would they win or lose? If you want the answers of these questions you will have to read the book.
