Summary: Riding Freedom
Comment: Have you ever read a historically based book that you were really into? Or have they all been incredibly boring? Riding Freedom was a very exciting adventure story based on a true event. You will most definitely fall in love with this story and not fall asleep. Most of the time you think of history as being very dull and boring but when Pam Ryan tells history, it is a different story.
Riding Freedom is the story of a teenage girl named Charlotte who became an orphan at a very young age and has lived in an orphanage for many years where she is the only girl. No one wanted to adopt a girl because they thought that young ladies could not do field work or other things around the house. So Charlotte is stuck in the kitchen helping the cook do chores. One thing about Charlotte is that she has always loved and cared for horses and is very good with them, too. She rides very well and many boys dislike her for her riding abilities. One day Charlotte receives bad news from several different friends and is forced to change her life or be stuck doing chores for an overweight cook forever .

Summary: Book review for Riding Freedom
Comment: Book Review
Pam Munoz Ryan has written over 25 books. She writes most of her books for young adults. The book Riding Freedom won the national willa Cather award. Pam wrote Riding Freedom as a realistic fiction book. Th major theme throughout this book is freedom is never too far to grasp. She ran away and got a boy disguise just so she could be with horses. That was freedom for Charlotte. In mid 1800's there was a girl named charlotte Parkhurst. She was an orphan because her parents died in a wagon accident. Luckily she was thrown and brought to safety. "Kirkus says that this story flows along effortlessly". He thinks Riding Freedom is credible and entertaining.
Brian selnick the illustrator shows a great illustration on the front cover. This picture relates to the story because there's a picture of charlotte and her horse called Freedom. Pam Ryan connects pictures to words in her book Riding freedom.
Charlotte wasn't like most girls her age. She had wild hairspring out of her brown braids. She wore a ribbon tied around her waist. Ebeneezar Balch was one of the major characters throughout this book. Charlotte lived temporally in ebeneezars barn. Charlotte was to work for him everyday. Then there was Mr. Millshark. He was the mean orphanage counselor. Charlotte was running from from him throughout the whole book. If you want to know want happens to charlotte parkhurst you'll have to read he book "Riding Freedom".

Summary: Breath taking adventure story based on true events
Comment: In the 1880's Charlotte "Charley" Darkey Parhurst took a lifetime adventure. Raised in an orphanage of all boys, Charlotte had a hard life working in the kitchen and was stuffed in the potato bin in the kitchen so she wouldn't be adopted. Life is bearable but once her best friend is adopted and she's left alone, she decides to do something about it. Charlotte loves horses and runs away and becomes a stable boy. While working there, her boss, Mr. Ebeneezer, teachers her how to be a coachman. To make her living and have a successful life she poses as a man and becomes a stage coach driver. Traveling from Massachutes to California, posing as "Charley" allows her to attain her dream of owning her own land. She is even the first woman to vote in the 1868 California presidential election, even though she is poseing as a man. This is a fictionalized biography with excellent drawings by Brian Selznick. Students who love horses will not be able to put this book down, as well as those who love adventure. This is a breath taking adventure story based on true events that readers grades 4 and up can appreciate.
