Summary: Even the chapter titles are repetitive and confusing!
Comment: Robert Graysmith's first book was riveting, so much so that I was compelled to read more on the subject. But "Zodiac Unmasked" was such a disappointment. While clearly there are many startling revelations in this book, the format in which it is laid out makes them difficult to find and nearly impossible to keep track of. I do believe the author makes a strong case against Arthur Leigh Allen, despite recent DNA evidence. It would be hard to find or recall from the book, but at one point Graysmith does say that A.L.A. would have had the foresight not to lick his own stamps or envelopes.
I think if this book had been written in a different format(a much shorter one for sure) with timelines and charts of facts, it would have been more enjoyable to read. Often the same piece of information is repeated over and over, making you wonder if you'd lost your place.
Also, the various names of Detectives and police investigators from different counties gets monotonous and confusing. Perhaps a chart with their various names/positions might have helped.
My husband bought me this book because he knew I enjoyed the first one. The only reason I finished it was because he kept asking me if I had read it yet.
Overall, a MOST unsatisfying read.

Summary: Don't bother with Bob Greysmith
Comment: I read the book 'Zodiac' before, and decided to get 'Zodiac Unmasked' to see who this Zodiac guy really was. When I read it, I thought I was reading Tom Voigt's website, because I read all that before there. I've been to the crime scenes before too, and I looked for that hidden road Bob Greysmith said led right to that prime suspect's house, Arthur Leigh Allen. And I didn't see that road at all! I have some good friends who live in and near Vallejo, and they didn't ever hear of such a road and they can't find it either. That made me wonder how good Bob Greysmith's research really was! I know Mr. Voigt's research is great, so what Bob Greysmith copied from his website had to be too, but his own research really had me wondering, like that supposed hidden road that I think he just made up to make Arthur Allen look more guilty. Even though Arthur Allen might have been that Zodiac killer guy, Bob Greysmith's book 'Zodiac Unmasked' doesn't help his case at all and makes some of the other suspects like Theodore Kaczinsky or Jack Beeman look good. Save your hard earned money, I wish I did.

Summary: Zodiac finally unmasked
Comment: This is the third book about Zodiac I have read and it is not the best. Graysmith's first ZODIAC book was better and so was THIS IS THE ZODIAC SPEAKING.Those books are essential reading on the Zodiac Killer. The first deals with the suspects and murders the second book deals with a psychological profile of the killer.
ZODIAC UNMASKED does present an interesting case against the suspect in the book but some of the socalled evidence is circumstantial. But not all of it.
Some evidence is pretty substantial. I will give examples
1. Zodiac victim Michael Mageau identifies Arthur Leigh Allen as the man that shot him by a licence photo.
2. Zodiac wrote in one of his letters that he kept pipe bombs in his basement. Allen had bombs in his basement.
3. The Zodiac killed 2 women and shot 2 men and killed another. Also he threatened to blow up a school bus full of children and shoot them as they come "bouncing out".Then he taunted the police with letters.Allen told his friend that he would do this and it happened. He told his friend that he would call himself the Zodiac. He said he would hunt his victims. What is the odds that someone else would do all this?
4. Allen was in Atascadero and the letters to the police stopped.
5. Allen was pulled over by police for speeding away near a crimescene and on his front seat was a long bladed knife dripping blood? Why didn't he hide it under the seat?
6. He drove the same kind of car as the Zodiac.
7. The description of the Zodiac matched Allen.
8. The police found cryptograms at Allen's residence.
9. Allen asked a friend on how to disguise his handwriting.
10.Allen mentioned to friends he would change his appearance.
You can explain away a couple of coincidences but not all of those. The reason why he wasn't arrested was because they couldn't match his handprinting to the letters and his DNA didn't match the residual saliva on the stamps he sent.If Allen was alive today he would probably be in jail for being the ZODIAC
killer.
Graysmith tries to say that Allen knew Ferrin (a victim) and that all the others murders were thrown in to confuse the police.Did the Zodiac stalk his victims from the get-go or did he come across them at random? A witness to the Ferrin murder said he heard Zodiac arguing with the two victims before he shot them.
Read the book and decided for yourself. I like to keep an open mind but I am pretty satisfied that Zodiac was finally unmasked.
