Summary: Helpful, but needs to be updated
Comment: I have always had an interest in developing my style and have sought out many books to help me. This title is one of the better ones I have read although it needs some revision and updating.
I like the general concept of the six basic styles, and agree with most of her examples. I did find it helpful and now I understand how to choose what will suit me best. At first I was suprised to see what category I fell into most,(Romantic), but as I gave it more thought I realized it's true. Now I have a clearer picture of what to look for when adding to my wardrobe.
My criticisms of the book are the following. It needs to be updated as some of the celebrities are getting dated. Photos and/or drawings of some style examples would be helpful. Also, her answers to some of the questions are somewhat vague and make it hard to determine what type to choose. I had to be careful not to pick what type I wanted to be instead of what my answers show me to really be. A multiple choice quiz might have been better, followed by a writing exercise to help you figure it all out.
If you can find a copy of this it is still worth buying.

Summary: Limited and outdated
Comment: Hartman has one insight: women and men fall into one of six basic styles: sporty, romantic (bohemian for men), traditional, classic, dramatic, and trendy. She doesn't provide much information about the style types beyond naming them, so it is not easy to determine your type (preferences in hairspray and shoulder pads aren't relevant to women who aren't stuck in the '80s), and she doesn't offer useful advice about building a wardrobe based on "your" style type (she uses a case-study approach without outlining the basics of each type). Clothing and accessory examples are dated and often universally unflattering (stirrup pants? jodhpurs? colored jeans? suspenders? keys on a long necklace?), and Hartman's personal color theory is emphasized (eggplant means you are hiding from your creativity, evergreen is unimaginative but moral, etc.). Overall, the book is annoying and of limited use--with the exception of the author's basic insight that each of us can identify and live, work, and play in clothing compatible with our personal style instead of being confined to a corporate or other sort of uniform. Unfortunately, Hartman doesn't do much to help us identify or use our personal style. I bought this book cheaply (used) and didn't feel that it was worth even that small price.

Summary: You'll Look Fahbulous, Dahling!
Comment: I found Fabulous You! very helpful in determining style. Essentially illustration-free, but that's not too big a deal; you really don't need it. It's about style, and making it work for you, not about seasons and colors. But it's *really* good at finding your style.
Hartman has a matter-of-fact writing style. She's friendly, no-nonsense and encouraging; it's like getting advice from an old friend who tells it like it is. I really enjoyed this book. I found it to be very helpful in finding the right style for me, and in how to incorporate it into my life. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who's got major closet chaos, and needs to DO something about it. Buy this book if you just can't find the style that suits you. I really like Hartman's approach and personality, and happily recommend Fabulous You!
