Summary: ASTOUNDING! AMAZING!
Comment: When I originally took this book off my grandpa's shelf, I wasn't thrilled about it. I had heard it was absolutely amazing, that it was a Jack Ryan book, but...the old copy I had in my hands just didn't grasp my attention. I shrugged anyway, took it with me, and put it on my shelf. I had two other Ryan novels to read! I quickly raced through both THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER and PATRIOT GAMES and, amazingly, found it time to start through THE CARDINAL OF THE KREMLIN. Almost immediately Ryan's vulnerabilities and cluelessness kept me in the game. There was the ruthless KGB, Gerisamov's lust for power, Filitov and his agony over betraying his country, the SDI research, and finally the confrontations between Ryan and Golovko. The plot thickened, as usual, and I became far more wrapped up in the novel. What makes this book so amazing? Perhaps it's Clancy's graceful writing, his in-depth research into SDI, or maybe his feel for the intensity between the United States and the Soviet Union. Whatever it was, Ryan's cleverness added onto the sheer power of the book... ...and makes it one of Clancy's best to date...

Summary: masterpiece...still exciting in a post cold war era...
Comment: this was the 2nd book i read by Mr.Clancy, the first having been RAINBOW SIX, which i was somewhat dissapointed with. After hearing other peoples opinions in regard to Tom's work, i decided to read one of his older novels, which was a very smart thing to do. Now i read this book in the year 2001, which is about 10 years after the fall of Communist Russia. Having read this after the demise of the Soviet Union, this still very exciting and gripping.
The plot is basicaly a race between the two superpowers for the ICBM missle defense system-- besicaly what Regan called "Star Wars." Now without giving away to much info in regard to the plot, there is a former Soviet tank commander, (three times hero of stalingrad i believe) who is currently working for the CIA to spy on the Russian's progress of thier missile defense system. He goes by the alias, CARDINAL, and is the CIA's most vital agent in this race for star wars. The book itself largely deals with espinoage (Human Intelliegnce specificaly) and Mr.Clancy gives great attention to the craft of spies. Overall this is one great book, filled with detail, action and a great plot.

Summary: A great spy story - 3 1/2 stars
Comment: I had a tough time deciding between 3 and 4 stars on this one, so I think I will actually give it 3 1/2 stars. I think the story was good and mostly believable. Clancy gives a great deal of realistic information on spying as well as counter-espionage during the Cold War. Certain parts of the plot require the reader to suspend their disbelief a great deal. This book is fun and exciting to read and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in the genre (or thinks they might be).
