Summary: A COMPLICATED MYSTERY WARRANTS A COMPLICATED ANSWER
Comment: 'Murder on the Links' is a fine story. There's the necessary murder/s, a semi-feasible plot, and, may I say, quite a turn of events that lead up to capturing the killer. Such a turn that no one--unless they've cheated and read to the end--will guess the murderer. But the thing that hinders me from giving this book a complete five stars is a matter of sheer detail.

It seems Christie felt the need to accentuate the foriegn-ness (if there is such a word) of her characters. Poirot has uncharacteristically halted speech, Hastings is ridiculously British, and the French police are fumbling in their splotchy and nonsensical English. This makes for a trying read. However, if you can wade through the ridiculous parts and find the meat of the story, you'll find a suitable mystery. Not the best of our Agatha, but certainly worth a look.

Summary: The return of Poirot and Hastings
Comment: This is the second Poirot/Hastings mystery and like MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES, Hastings is the narrator and is again speaking from a future time describing past actions (ala Watson in the Sherlock Holmes stories).

The action begins with Hastings meeting a young woman while on a train traveling through France to England. When they part at Calais Hastings believes he has seen the last of her. Soon after he and Poirot are traveling back to France at the request of a wealthy man who has made an appeal to Poirot. They arrive too late, the man had been murdered hours before. As they attempt to solve this crime another murder is commited, then a blackmail scheme is discovered that involves a twenty year old crime. To further complicate matters a young love triangle comes to light and one of the points seems to be the young lady Hastings had met on the train. In the end Poirot and Hastings prevail with a typical Christie last minute surprise.

This book, Christie's third novel, was published in 1923. The reader must keep the time frame in mind in order to understand some of the motivations of the characters and the limitations in police methods. Even with these constraints the story has held up well, due perhaps to Christie's trademark of equal parts of mystery and character development.

Hastings fans will particularly enjoy this novel because Hastings meets his future wife and begins his connection with South America.

Summary: A mystery that will keep you hungry for more
Comment: Murder on the Links is a great book that has the best beginning of any book that I have ever read. It starts off by a detective named Hasting visiting his friend Hercule Poirot. On his way to visit him, he meets a girl that he finds just astonishing. He does nothing about seeing this amazing girl because he believes he will never meet her again. Poirot receives a letter telling him to venture off to a French town because the man who wrote the letter fears his life is in danger. They quickly head to the town, and later find out that the man had been murdered the night before. Poirot doesn't go along with the beliefs that the police hold. He needs to get to the bottom of the case before another murder. I felt that this book was very good in the beginning but began to fall apart halfway through the book. I do not have much experience in the mystery genre, so I do not know what to expect. Being a teenager, I felt that the book was at a more advanced level for me, and I wish I had a dictionary always on hand to look up words in the novel. On the other hand, the character development was amazing. For example, if Christie didn't include the names following the dialogue, I would be able to tell who said it because I already knew so much about the character. In addition, this book had great clues as to who the murderer might be. But were unfortunately usually too hard for me; which might be a good or bad thing. Overall Murder on the Links was a great book that kept you hanging and wanting to read more. Murder on the Links will keep me reading more mysteries!
