Summary: One of the earliest American pioneers of California
Comment: "Echoes of the Past" consists of three articles John Bidwell wrote around 1890 for the Century Magazine. It covers a roughly 10-year period from the first pioneer overland journey to California (of which Bidwell was a leader) to the Bear Flag Revolt. In 1841 Bidwell came to California as a member of the Bidwell-Bartleson Party. Upon arriving in California, he became one of John Sutter's top lieutenants, and as such is able to give a knowledgeable eye to the many events in early California history. His narrative is enlivened with many anecdotes: one of the most memorable is the story of Pablo Guiterrez. Guiterrez first discovered gold in California in 1844, four years before Marshall's discovery, but due to an interlingual misconception it was not acted upon. Guiterrez ended up being lynched during an insurrection that same year and so Marshall got the glory. As a distant relative of Bidwell I found this book even more fascinating.
