Summary: Better decisions made easy
Comment: I have to admit I was skeptical when I picked this book up. I've never been much for these "self-help" books. However, "What Should I Do?" truly delivers. It provides a simple framework for making everyday decisions that often bog us down. In a society that has us all constantly on the move, the efficiency of this approach, if nothing else, is certainly helpful. However, what I like most is that it helps you get to the right choice for you. Rather than tell you what the right answer is (and don't we all get enough of that), "What Should I Do?" gives you a way to identify the relevant values and evaluate options.
Unlike many other books, this one also provides you with meaningful hypotheticals that show you how to apply Dr. Weinstein's suggestions to real problems in your life. For example, in chapter 5 there's a discussion of long-term relationships and that age-old problem of who does what (or who doesn't do what) around the house. By examining the options in much the same way Dr. Weinstein does in the book, my wife and I were able to reach a decision that made sense for both of us (although the solution remains a work in progress!).
Finally, as a skeptic I tend to look at the credentials of the author. There are so many hucksters on this circuit, you can't be too careful. I was pleased to see that Dr. Weinstein went to Swarthmore, has a Ph.D. from Georgetown, has edited three other books and has published over twenty articles on ethics in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Sage advice from a reliable source. This book is a gem.

Summary: Real-life ethics for real-life people
Comment: This book was excellent! What makes it stand out from the crowd is that it offers succinct choices for each situation Weinstein includes, then it carefully and completely provides insight as to the implications of each decision. Weinstein's understanding of ethics in everyday life is aptly demonstrated in the situations he's outlined. Possibly one of the book's greatest strengths is the author's talent at taking situations in which any of us might find ourselves, applying a simple technique to help us determine the most ethical decision, and offering it in easy-to-read verbiage that deftly illuminates the crux of the situation as well as potential conflicts and implications. While Weinstein offers a thorough explanation for the ethical choice he's identified in each situation, I finished the book with an understanding that we have been left to determine for ourselves which path to take, well-equipped with options and insights that will translate easily into aspects of other situations we face every day. Weinstein's knowledge of his subject, careful research and easy-to-read style of writing make this book a delight to read!
