Summary: Female assassin leads cops on a deadly chase.
Comment: Clara Rinker is back in John Sandford's latest thriller, "Mortal Prey." She is the deadliest female assassin that I have ever encountered in fiction. Not only is Rinker a whiz with firearms, but she can also outmaneuver the FBI and the police with ease.

Rinker has spent a good part of her life killing people for money. After years of plying her trade, she has accumulated more than enough cash to retire and she has decided to settle down in Mexico with the man she loves. However, a sudden act of violence changes Rinker's plans and she is back in the business of killing once again. She decides to take revenge on the people whom she believes ruined her one chance at happiness and the cops are desperate to stop her before she wreaks any further havoc.

The FBI calls in Lucas Davenport, a Deputy Chief in the Minneapolis Police Department, to help track down Rinker. Davenport has dealt with her before and he was lucky to have survived the encounter. Davenport is currently planning his wedding, but he leaves his pregnant fiancée back in Minneapolis and joins in the hunt for Rinker.

"Mortal Prey" is a repetitious series of vignettes in which Rinker plies her trade, always staying one or two steps ahead of the cops. The supposedly skilled team of FBI agents and cops who are after Rinker are completely outmatched by her superhuman intellect and daring. Rinker doesn't come across as a human being. She is a killing machine with ice in her veins. "Mortal Prey" is filled with violent encounters between the killer and her victims and there really is no contest between Rinker and the cops. She is simply too good at what she does. This throws the book way off balance. A good hunter/prey book has a little more balance between the combatants.

The characterizations are thin and the plot veers from one place to another with very little coherence. Davenport is a likeable enough protagonist, but he has very little to do other than try to figure out where and how Rinker will strike next. "Mortal Prey" doesn't work because the criminal is simply too deadly to be true and the book drags on long after it should have reached its inevitable conclusion.

Summary: Good, but not the best
Comment: I liked this book, though, as a die hard Prey fan, I would not rate it among the better books in the series, like "Mind Prey." This novel finds Davenport once again tracking down Clara Rinker, the female contract killer from "Certain Prey." While living in retirement with her new boyfriend in Cancun, Rinker loses both him and her unborn child to an assassin's bullet meant for her. Believing the failed attempt on her life to be the work of her former employers, who would rather not take the chance of her turning them over to the FBI, Rinker embarks on a mission to kill the four men she believes were involved. Lucas is recruited by the FBI to help in the search for Rinker. This book was, in my mind, one of those books that you can't tell whether you like or dislike. It had some very good elements, but some parts just didn't work well. I really enjoyed seeing Rinker going after her former bosses, and I thought it was a unique twist for Sandford to leave the audience sympathizing with the villain, a rarity in his books. Other parts left me scoffing, such as the FBI enlisting Davenport to help them. It's very typical of Sandford to make the FBI look like morons, and I didn't see any reason why they needed Lucas, who had only met Rinker twice before and had failed to catch her even then. It was a poor excuse to get him involved in the pursuit. All in all, if you're a Prey fan, I urge you to read this, though I don't see it as one of the "classics."

Summary: Davenport v Rinker Part 2
Comment: Clara Rinker, a top-notch hitwomen introduced in Certain Prey, returns with a vengeance. She has attempted to settle down and retire, but while living in Mexico, her boyfriend and unborn child are killed by a gunman. As she recovers from her own wounds, she starts planning her revenge on those who are responsible: organized crime bosses in St. Louis; former clients. Two FBI agents return from Certain Prey also: Mallard and Malone. They call in Lucas Davenport, the deputy Commisioner of Police of Minneapolis, as a consultant to help them attempt to net Clara Rinker. Thus begins a very solid Prey novel, as one would expect from John Sanford. He breaks no new ground with this novel, but does a great job keeping the reader entertained. The novel does not bog down into a lot of unnecessary detail and filler; it keeps moving at a good pace. As stated above, a number of the main characters are recycled from Certain Prey. However, if the reader has forgotten the details of that book, it won't affect the enjoyment of this one. A thoroughly enjoyable read for seasoned Sanford fans as well as those who have never read a Prey book.
