Summary: Good, but not the best
Comment: I liked this book, though, as a die hard Prey fan, I would not rate it among the better books in the series, like "Mind Prey." This novel finds Davenport once again tracking down Clara Rinker, the female contract killer from "Certain Prey." While living in retirement with her new boyfriend in Cancun, Rinker loses both him and her unborn child to an assassin's bullet meant for her. Believing the failed attempt on her life to be the work of her former employers, who would rather not take the chance of her turning them over to the FBI, Rinker embarks on a mission to kill the four men she believes were involved. Lucas is recruited by the FBI to help in the search for Rinker. This book was, in my mind, one of those books that you can't tell whether you like or dislike. It had some very good elements, but some parts just didn't work well. I really enjoyed seeing Rinker going after her former bosses, and I thought it was a unique twist for Sandford to leave the audience sympathizing with the villain, a rarity in his books. Other parts left me scoffing, such as the FBI enlisting Davenport to help them. It's very typical of Sandford to make the FBI look like morons, and I didn't see any reason why they needed Lucas, who had only met Rinker twice before and had failed to catch her even then. It was a poor excuse to get him involved in the pursuit. All in all, if you're a Prey fan, I urge you to read this, though I don't see it as one of the "classics."

Summary: Hell Hath No Fury
Comment: In Mortal Prey, thirteenth installment of the "Prey" series, John Sanford "reunites" Lucas Davenport with Clara Rinker, the highly successful hit woman who almost cashed in Lucas's chips once before.
Rinker became involved with Lucas when she accepted a job in Minneapolis, and Lucas managed to track her down and almost catch her. She tried to kill him, he almost killed her, and she retired after almost being killed by her employers who didn't want her retired and loose knowing all she knew about them. Between books, she escaped to Mexico and quite by accident became involved with the son of a drug ring godfather. She figured out who the family was, but they didn't know about her.
The new story begins when a sniper kills Rinker's boyfriend and almost kills her as well, and does cause her to lose the baby she is carrying. Everyone assumes the hit is connected to her boy friend's family. Not Rinker. She knows it is her old employers trying to tie up a loose end, and she is also concerned that the family will find out and blame her. So she takes off as soon as she gets well, and heads to St. Louise for revenge. When the facts about Rinker come to light, the FBI gets involved and brings in Lucas, who has come closer than anyone else to apprehending her.
Even though the FBI has figured out who her probable targets are and is trying to protect them, Rinker stays one step ahead. The task force stays as close at they do only because Lucas brings street cop smarts into the game to go with the computer-driven FBI analyses. The suspense builds, the blood flows, and the bad guys fall away one by one.
In the end, after a surprising plot twist, there is justice of a kind. Does Rinker get away from Lucas again? Read Sandford's Mortal Prey and find out.

Summary: Prey Review
Comment: Mortal Prey by John Sandford is thrilling. Mortal Prey is suspensful from the beginning to the end. Clara Rinker is the best-hit woman in the business. She has moved to Mexico to start a new life with a new man. After a sniper takes her man and her child, Rinker vows revenge. She knows the bullet was intended for her. Rinker returns to seek revenge on her old enemies. In her own unique way she takes them out one by one and anyone else who gets in her way. Rinker's old acquaintance Lucas Davenport is back. Lucas teams up with the FBI to track her down. He is street smart and savvy. Lucas gets close to a group of retired cops and together their unorthodox ways get them closer and closer to Rinker. She manages to keep slipping away from the FBI.
Mortal Prey is one of a series of Prey books. Initially the beginning puzzels you if you are not a Prey reader. After a few chapters, you are up to speed though. For those of us who are not Prey readers, John Sandford gives enough detail about the characters so you know their connection from previos books. This information makes you curious to read the other books in the series. His attention to detail is magnificent you feel as though you are with each of Rinker's victims. The suprise ending leaves you wanting to know more. I was pleased with this book and look forward to reading more in the Prey series.
