Rating: 4
Summary: Touching book with a few minor flaws.
Comment: Overall, "The Street", by Ann Petry, is a very entertaining and thoughtfully written book. The first few pages of the novel are a bit slow, but the pace and creativity picks up as one delves deeper into the writing. Although the plot is sometimes overburdened by excessive detail, it flows smoothly from one scenario to the next with only flashbacks breaking up the timeline. The only disappointment that I found was the abrupt ending. Although this may be a device used by Petry, it is rather sudden and doesn't seem to be as fulfilling as the rest of the text. Other than a few flaws, the book is very touching and worth reading.

Rating: 4
Summary: A good book, but no classic
Comment: This book, "The Street," was, as many have written, an intriguing insight into the culture in which the book is set. The reader is allowed to follow the main character Lutie through the perils of daily life in Harlem. The setting of a hard-knock life in the streets gives the reader a look at a life that very likely has little in common with their own. This is the book's best characteristic. This setting, along with the extensive character development, make this book well worth reading but perhaps a little overhyped. With what is in my opinion a rather abrupt and disappointing ending as well as an overabundance of details Ann Petry makes what could've been one of the great books of the twentieth century simply a good book.

Rating: 5
Summary: A Very Powerful Book
Comment: One of the most moving novels I have ever read. Petry's novel displays naturalism at its finest. More than that, it is an enjoyable, easy read! I highly recommend it.
