Summary: Excellent read...
Comment: I highly recommend Mr Sears' account of the epic battle at Chancellorsville. Despite this being a most scholarly endeavor, I found the pacing and styling most reader-friendly. Of course, one often gets confused by the details of "this brigade" and "that division", and the constant name-dropping of commanders can get one dizzy at times. None of this however, subtracts from my enjoyment of this marvelous account.

Although I am a Secesh-er, I applaud Mr Sears attempt to try to give "Fightin'" Joe Hooker his due. As often happens in "these" types of events, Sears does to some degree, maintain that Hooker was NOT the usual blue-clad buffoon that marred Yankee efforts throughout the early stages of the war. Perhap Hooker was indeed the victim of the "fog of war" disease that even bested Thomas J Jackson during the Seven Days. I'm now willing to look at Joe Hooker in a more tolerant light.

On a more structural note, the hardcover is complete with many helpful maps, and the appendices contains order(s)of battle and casualties records. Caution - text is somewhat small print!

Summary: Best book yet on Chancellorsville
Comment: Stephen Sears has earned a reputation as one of the top Civil War authors today and with Chancellorsville he once again shows why. First off, Sears is just a great writer. To many Civil War books are written by authors who know the subject and have done all the right research but simply don't have the writing talents to put the information into a form that is both informative and entertaining. That is not the case with Sears. His writing skills are equel to his research and the result is a book that is both informative and a pleasure to read.

In Chancellorsville Sears tackles the battle that many think is Lee's greatest and there is some credence to that. However it was also a costly victory for Lee. He lost many men he could not replace and worst of all he loses one of his top commanders Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.

I think one of the important things about this book is Sears's attempt to take a good hard look at Hooker during the battle. Hooker is to often overlooked when it comes to generals of the Civil War but he really is an interesting man. Chancellorsville is the only battle where he got to lead the Army of the Potomac and he had an excellent plan in place. Sears's also explores Hooker's plan for the battle, why it went wrong and takes an especially hard look at General Howard and his 11th Corp which was so surprised by Jackson's flanking march. This book is truly a must read for any Civil War buff.

Summary: No need for another Chancellorsville book!
Comment: This is the definitive volume on the Chancellorsville Campaign, bar none! No other book need be written about this campaign, although more would be welcome. Mr. Sears is a great writer, and it shows. The Chancellorsville Campaign is considered by many "Lee's Greatest Victory," and, well, this book is Sears' greatest victory!

As if the terrific writing is not enough, the maps, by George Skoch, are excellent. There is also an abundance of maps, always a plus in my book. Maps are essential to a military history; these maps do not dissapoint.

I found the account of the despise of General Burnside to be great, and the rendering of Stonewall Jackson's ill-timed death moving. If you are a buff of Civil War--or even military--history, this book is essential to your library. If this book does not go down as one of the greatest of Civil War writing, it would be a crying shame. Get this book!
