Summary: Great for 'window shopping' roses
Comment: This is a great little book if you're hunting for new roses to try in your garden. Each page features a different rose, listing the rose's hardiness zone, height, fragrance, thorniness, ease of care, and tips for growing that particular rose--especially helpful information for beginners. The photographs of the roses (all top performers, by the way) are first-rate. Though I only have a few of the roses listed, I've found that the photos gave a very good indication of the results I've gotten in my own garden (when I've bothered to spray, that is.)
A bonus to this book is that for each rose listed, the author has listed some acceptable substitutes, and included information on what makes the substitute different from the original rose listed. There are also side articles in the book on everything from propogating to mulching to watering. Though I wouldn't buy this book as a reference on rose care per se, there are a lot of very good tips in here that don't always appear in the bigger (and pricier) rose guides. It's an ideal read for the winter, when you're thinking about what you'd like to add to your garden in the spring.
For the price, this is a great title for any rose gardener or rose-gardener-to-be, and deserves a space on the reference shelf.
