Summary: Look for the third edition
Comment: The Road Goes Ever On is an interesting acquisition for keen Tolkienists for all the reasons other reviews have already gone into. I borrowed a copy of the original edition from my local library years ago, and was thrilled to find the third edition (c1993) at a bookshop recently. (Sadly, the composer passed away in 1994, so no further editions are likely.)

The third edition includes additional settings of "Bilbo's last song" and "Luthien Tinuviel" (from the Silmarillion) and comes with a CD that contains recordings of the whole song cycle, accompanied by piano. (The singer who does most of the songs seems a little... affected with lots of rolled Rs, but it's a good reference to listen to before playing.)

Summary: There is more than music in this book
Comment: The Road Goes Ever On was first published in the early 1960s, when Tolkien was still answering a great deal of fan mail asking questions about Middle-earth. There was so much more he wanted to tell his reading audience that he sometimes leaped at the chance to give them a little more about his Elves.

The Road Goes Ever On thus provides a glimpse of Elven history and mysticism found nowhere else. Linguists have also perused the analysis of the poems Tolkien provided. There is something for everyone in this volume.

Summary: Interesting musical diversion for Tolkien fans
Comment: I bought the hardcover version, and although the 'look' was old, the decoration of both the dust jacket and hardbinding was pleasing elvish script by Tolkien. The music itself takes a bit of getting into if you are not a proficient piano player (the music is for piano, voice and occasionally guitar) but once you have it down it is interesting listening to how Tolkien envisioned his music. This book was only 4 stars since there were many more songs from Tolkien's books I would have loved to have seen in here. Overall, very interesting for the musical Tolkien fans out there, but some favourite songs are missing, and the music can be difficult to play in places.
