Summary: Palahniuk Does It Again
Comment: Well, once again, at the end of this book, all I could think was, "That was one hell of a book." This is the case with all of Chuck Palahniuk's outrageous and disturbingly gripping novels, especially the one in question, "Invisible Monsters." The narrator in this story is a hopeless ex-model whose stunning looks have been destroyed by an "accident" that left her horribly disfigured. She meets an almost-transexual, Brandy Alexander, and the two go on a journey together to start life over and find themselves by doing the opposite of what they should want, keeping their lives interesting, making the reader think and entertaining them at the same time. Palahniuk, as usual, takes creativity and runs with it, coming up with possibly his best narrative yet, the story jumping from one point in time to another, and forming characters that you hate, pity, and almost love all at once. This is one of Chuck's best novels, definitely better than "Fight Club" (wait, aren't all of them?). Yeah. That's all there is to it. So buy it. And read it. And love it.

Summary: Bizarre Hilarity..The Jackass Crew has nothing on these guys
Comment: If I had to recommend a single Palahniuk book, other than the justifiably overhyped Fight Club, it would be this one. Not as meandering as Choke, self-righteous as Survivor, and as brief as Lullaby. Invisible Monsters is another one of his books that plays itself as a film within your head...you try not to gasp in horror and laugh at the same time. It has a solid story and a concrete ending! Palahniuk needs to follow this model using his style as a assault on your imagination. I'm suprised that this is not as popular as Fight Club...seeing as how this is every bit as stylistic as it was. For those of you that can't get Brad Pitt out of your head when you read about Tyler Durden, this is a good one to pick up before a film version steals that purity from you. It's cheaply priced and a fun read...the pages blaze by.

Summary: Another gripping page turner from the master of grotesque
Comment: Invisible Monsters was a very interesting book in its manner of narrative. There is very little actually story progression; instead, Palahniuk uses a very non-linear, random method of releasing certain facts at opportune times to let the reader know what's going on. Thus the reader is surprised multiple times, leading them through a story that slowly evolves into a lot more than just a tale of lost vanity. This is a tale of sexual identity, vanity, jealousy, and truth. Everything about it is weird and yet everything is original and smartly produced.
In this it is very similar to all his other books. He displays a complete disregard for the standards of human sensibility and this makes his novels great. Combine this with his sprawling talent for quick, attack-like sentences and you have a great novel.
My only really problems with this novel were the manner in which he releases information throughout the novel. In the manner of his previous novels, it feels as if you are learning the information along with the characters. It's all really surprising and quite jolting when read. In the case of Invisible Monsters, all the realizations, while quite clever and very surprising are too convenient. The manner of narrative is such that the way he presents his revelations is too contrived. You can see the author behind the words, and that's always distracting to the grand narrative of any novel.
It all boils down in the end to whether Palahniuk is your cup of tea or not though. If you're into his type of story, all of his books are genius and I wouldn't only recommend this one but everything else he's written, but if you've got a weak stomach or simply dislike reading about human beings being horrible and wretched to one another, than this is not the book for you, as are any of the rest. (You really should check him out anyways though. He's a great writer.)
