Summary: Palahniuk tops Fight Club
Comment: I didn't think it was possible for Chuck to top his first book Fight Club, but i think he did so with Survivor. I recently watched the fight club movie and it has since become my favourite, so i decided to go out and buy the book. I read the book and thought it was absolutely excellent. It really makes the reader think about materialism, and the other issues brought up in this book. I liked it so much i went out and bought the rest of his novels, including a signed copy of his newest Choke. I read Survivor on a plane if you can believe and thought it was one of the best books ever written. It's thought provoking and makes us look at the world and fame in a different light. It was also original in the way that both the chapters and the page numbers were like a countdown. The 'stairmaster' chapter has to be my favourite chapter in the book. It was just so wonderful and insightful. This is a great book with an thought-provoking and original plot. And Chuck continues to be one of the newest great writers of today.

Summary: A Phenomenal Book
Comment: Well, if there's a writer these days whose novels are definitely worth reading, his name is Chuck Palahniuk, author of "Fight Club" (better than the movie, by the way). His second novel, "Survivor," is a masterpiece that tells the story of Tender Branson, survivor of a Creedish death cult. The book begins at the end, page 289, with Tender aboard an empty airplane that is doomed to crash in the middle of the Australian Outback, and he recording the story of how everything went downhill, on the plane's flight recorder. This book has amazing characters (as do all of his books), whether it be the strange, ultimately doomed protagonist, or the mysterious woman he loves, Fertility Hollis. The story is a wonderfully twisted satire on fame, religion, and martyrdom. Told by Tender and very well-paced, "Survivor" is a novel that is most definitely worth reading, and it (as well as Palahniuk's other novels) come highly recommended.

Summary: sophmore jinx ?
Comment: I absolutely loved the later works Choke and Lullaby. I found both to be incredibily interesting, sharp and well-crafted works of satire. This one just didn't do it for me. Maybe after Fight Club, Chuck was wrestling with the "sophmore jinx"? There's obvious effort here and Survivor is a "good" book, but I would have to honestly say it's a few stars short of a "great book".

With Choke I truly cared about the main character's exploits. I waited in anticipation for what loomed next and ultimately turned pages quickly. I could not put it down. Survivor just didn't do it for me. I found it a forced read. There are select moments in which this story shines. Some of the "bazillion" metaphors present are dead on hilarious and inciteful. Others are not.

It is impossibile to hit a home run with every trip to the plate. This one's a nice effort, but falls short of the fence. I hope to crack Invisible Monsters next.
