Summary: A Third Grade Teacher Weighs In
Comment: As a third grade teacher, I agree that this book can be a good supplement to the general knowledge your student should possess. However, I agree that this book is very ethnocentric and glossess over all parts of a solid multicultural curriculum that is CRUCIAL to your child's success in school and life. Feel free to use the book as a home supplement, but do not take the curriculum as the be all end all of third grade. Your child is capable of more than this book allows them to express. Overall, Core Knowledge scares me and other educators that are committed to seeing a country that is not rasist. Use with caution.

Summary: Helpful Tool
Comment: We bought this to use with our daughter this summer. She had just finished third grade and I wanted to be sure that she was up-to-par before she started fourth grade. The history portions were well written and easy for her to understand. She enjoyed the poetry pieces especially. I wouldn't rely on this soley, if I were homeschooling, but it does make a very helpful and handy tool for suplimenting a public school education.

Summary: solid fundamentals
Comment: I find this series very useful for reviewing with my children - to ensure that my son "got it" for material taught in class, and to cover aspects that teachers were less interested in (like simple machines). It isn't glitzy, but it lets me know what my kids ought to know and helps with the level of detail they can handle. I can augment with glossy picture-books, testing material out with hands-on work at home, ad lib. This provides the framework. (Wish there was a pre-school book for my 3-year old!)
