Summary: Good Story -- Little Detail
Comment: Despite the provocative title there is very little insider detail in this book concerning Delta Force. It is simply one man's personal and deliberately vague account of his service with Delta from its early beginnings in the late '70's through the turmoil of the '80's. The author very masterfully tells his story without "spilling the beans" concerning Delta's operations.
This is of course understandable but if you are looking for a real "nitty gritty" look at America's secret counter terror force you will have to look elsewhere. If, on the other hand, you want to read a well written account of what Delta is all about and get a taste of what they do this book will not disappoint.
While specifically protective of Delta's secrets this is not some whitewashed PR piece. The author is quick to denounce fools and admit mistakes. His disdain for career-minded politicians and officers is obvious as is his dedication to his men and his country.
The author has a frank, smooth writing style that is very pleasant to read and his insights on what he did for a living are refreshingly thoughtful, mature and even occasionally poignant in a genre that often can be boastful, arrogant and at times shallow. Most authors from inside the special ops community that I've read gave me the impression that they would be hard to like personally but this book's author made me feel like he would be a man I could comfortably introduce to my family and respect not just because he can kick some tail but also because he seems to be a genuine class act all around.
Pass this one by if you want a gritty, "in your face" commando yarn but if you a well written soft-sell on what Delta Force is all about then definitely give this book a try.

Summary: On the cutting edge
Comment: Author Eric Haney pulls back the curtain on the most secret counter terrorist unit in our country. As a career soldier who achieved the highest possible enlisted rank at the youngest age he is savvy enough to safeguard sensitive information while offering a true insider's look at what has been an enigmatic unit. Most Americans are probably ignorant of the very existence of Delta Force much less conversant with the demanding selection and training process that makes this unit so outstanding. Haney offers far more here than a mere kiss and tell work. His insightful look at the mental stresses he endured and life's lessons that he has discovered as a result offer the reader a level of revelation deeper than the surface story itself. Haney is an extremely talented and versatile writer who is able to weave a personal story with current history so well that the reader forgets that he is looking in from the outside and begins to imagine what life on the inside of this elite, cloistered unit must be like. And, friend, it ain't easy!
Inside Delta Force ought to be a must read for all Americans. Buy two and send a copy to your closest relative or best friend. In the times of crisis that we now endure just the knowledge that tough, smart, dedicated soldiers like Command Sergeant Major Eric Haney and his comrades stand between us and the horror of international terrorism gives great comfort to us all. Hats off to Haney as a terrific writer and a wonderful example of the best that America can produce!

Summary: It was written but.....
Comment: Haney's book is highly entertaining, ideal fodder for
a 4-8hr. plane ride; any remotely devout reader, however,
would do well to leave this tome with lingering doubts. While
CSM Haney's absence from Beckwith's memoirs is plausible en-
ough(had more guys in CAG then he could he reasonably mention.
"Allen" was the alias for a sergeant whom Haney also described
as a pointman during Operation Eagle Claw, not Haney himself),his
depiction of Delta is subserviently from a "counterrorism"pers-
pective, paying scant attention to the unit's more prev-
alent duties(reconnaisance, surgical strikes, Olympic security
details), a gross underplay of the operatives' heroism in SCUD
alley during Operation Desert Storm being the most glaring
of such omissons. We are told that the roster consists
only of a few hundred men, but even mild allusion to
Delta's role in the ultimately lethal hunt for Columbian
drug lord Pablo Escobar and the Waco siege are persona
non grata; even if Haney wasn't involved in any of the-
se ops, didn't they still play a role pivotal enough in
the unit's short history to warrant at least passing
mention? As the sole member of JSOC to include female
soldiers, one would anticipate either some self-heckling or
self-exaltation on the writer's part, but thisalso seemed
too sundry a topic for Haney.
Curiously enough, such a list could with the aid of
close scrutiny probably reach the length of the Nile.Mo-
st disturbing of all however, is this supposed counterr-
or maestro's chalking militant fundamentalism up to a
"Muslim attitude problem" despite the most diastorous ter-
roist attack pre-911 being commited by an American of
Anglo-Irish extraction who sported a distinguished armed
forces record. In time, such a memoir may very well re-
ad less like a portrait of "life on the inside"than a
smoking gun to any and all seeking to prove that the in-
habitants of the Deep Southeast are nothing more than
21st century serfs and mawkish wannabes.
