Summary: Telling It Like It Is
Comment: Pearl Cleage offers a very realistic yet hard look into the life of an HIV positive black woman.

Ava Johnson leaves her big city Atlanta life and heads to her hometown to spend the summer with her widowed sister to gain some peace and relaxation while she battles with HIV. However, once Ava arrives she realizes that her small childhood hometown has its fair share of problems which Ava finds herself smack dab in the middle of. Ava's sister's determination to do good in the community fuels Ava to stay on and tackle the town's growing problems of crack addiction, teenage pregnancy and violence. Also, for the first time in Ava's life she has found love.

The voice and the guts the author gave this story was very enjoyable. However, some of the characters seemed a little too created with Eddie being way too perfect and the reverend's wife being way too conniving. All in all this was an enjoyable book but just a little rough on the edges. Like life, enjoyable but with a few rough edges which is what I think the author was trying to portray....real life.

Summary: My second favorite Oprah Book Club selection
Comment: One of the common statements I have read in describing this book is that it's hard to believe that a book with so many heavy themes is such a light read. It's true. Some of the ugliest scenes of the book had a tremendous impact on me yet I was able to move on without feeling like they were belittled by the light touch of the author. I frequently found myself feeling angry reading this book - angry at the prejudice faced by Ava because of her HIV status and at the violence directed at women by the men in this book, and because of the intolerance of the church. I liked that about the book though that I felt the anger but never was preached at. I also liked the short chapters. It can be discouraging starting a 45 page chapter. Her chapters never ran on for more than 3-4 pages at a time but it didn't feel choppy at all. Next to Stones from the River by Ursula Hegi this is my favorite Oprah Book Club selection. I've read 11 of the selections (and not all were enjoyable) but this one definitely was.

Summary: Looks Like Crazy.... A MUST read
Comment: Ava Johnson was the typical everyday woman until a trip to the doctors changed her life; she was diagnosed with AIDS. As a result of all of the stress that comes with living in a big city (Atlanta) and living with AIDS, Ava decides to make a pit stop at her sister's home, while on her way to move to San Francisco. However, once in Idlewood, Michigan, at her sister, Joyce's, everything changes. This book tells about the summer from Ava's point of view. At first, it seems like a pretty harsh book, with AIDS, teen pregnancy, suicide, drug and alcohol abuse and domestic violence. However, the way Cleage ties all of these realities together makes the book even more eventful. Her use of first person allows you, as the reader, to feel as though the book is talking directly to you. Overall, the book is a great example of real life turned into a fiction novel that is a must read for everyone.
