Summary: A South Dakota mystery
Comment: Tory Bauer, an overweight, forty-something waitress in the fictional town of Delphi, S.D., becomes an ad hoc detective in this thoroughly enjoyable mystery by S.D. writer Taylor. While the mystery is the plot, the subject is the lifestyle and customs of this High Plains tiny town, Delphi. Taylor's witty insightful writing presents a funny and dear portrait of small town life in South Dakota. Her characters come to life in the reader's mind, until you think you could just drop by the café in Delphi and say "hi" to Tory, Del, Stu, et al. It's a fun mystery, and it's a nice bit of anthropology as well.

Summary: A delightful cozy
Comment: I had read the first two Tory Bauer books by Kathleen Taylor when each was originally published, and for some reason I can't remember I decided not to read any more of her books. However, as it was highly recommended to me this week, I decided to give FUNERAL FOOD a try. I was pleasantly surprised, as I enjoyed the book tremendously. Over 40, overweight, widowed and terribly human, Tory is a heroine for the average American woman. I certainly can identify with her.
Tory discovers the dead body of a young Morman missionary in the closet of the cafe where she waitresses. Tory thinks he is the victim of a love triangle, as her roommate Del has had eye on the young man, rousing the ire of Del's current (and abusive) flame.
While the identify of the murderer was obvious to me mid-way through the book, I still enjoyed the book very much. The characters were fully developed, and I laughed all the way through. Cozy lovers should find FUNERAL FOOD a delight.

Summary: Slow
Comment: Good herione, but the story drags and the ending is the pits, feels contrived as a way to wrap up the story. Too many sidelines.
