Summary: Russian silver nights
Comment: The setting is Russia in 1764, a nice change of scenery! The head of Russia, Czarina Catherine has arranged a marriage between Princess Sophia Alexeyevna and one of her head military leaders who is known to be a strict military tyrant at home as well as on the battle field, who is 30 years her senior. She will be his 4th wife (the 1st 3 were met by accidents). Apparently he is hard to please. Count Adam Danilevski, her future husband's head soldier, is her messenger and her escort to the wedding and new home. Due to the lengthy travel, Adam has a chance to get to know the free-spirited Sophie real well- her strengths and weaknesses, and falls in love with her wanting to protect her even from her future husband (knowing his "track record"). She suffers abuse at the hands of her husband for control of will and it is a loveless match. Sophie looks towards Adam for just a little spark of love that she must have to survive. The story is full of adventure, surprises, elaborate parties and secret escapades. How will Sophie escape him and who will be friend her- will be a surprise for you. The love she experiences with Adam is sooo sweet and your heart goes out to Adam at how the adultery tears at him. And without giving away the ending, I am sure glad that romances have happying endings because this one would have sure been a "tear-jerker" if not. It's a really good story and I truly recommend it.

Summary: Serves the genre well
Comment: This was the first Jane Feather book that I read and I still feel it is the best, some 10 years later. The story is captivating and suspenseful and the characters are well-written, with positive qualities and flaws. The setting is outside the usual British or American historical locale, which adds to its interest. All the way through this book you want to know what will happen to Sophie and Adam and you're not disappointed in the final outcome!

Summary: Love with a Twist
Comment: This was one of the first books by Jane Feather that I had read earlier last year. It was well crafted and poignant; one couldn't help but feel for the anguish the heroine Sophia had to go through throughout the book.
I'd just like to remind fellow readers that the concept of adultery is not so unacceptable; it is quite commonplace in the books of Danielle Steel (Irresistible Forces) and Susan Johnson (Seized by Love). As I understand, it usually occurs when women are forced into unhappy "beneficial" matches for their families' gain or for dynastic reasons. Sadly, these marriages are often "spring/winter" affairs or they come complete with cruel spouses/family members or frequently, both, that they almost always end in dire consequences.
Silver Nights is one such novel. I felt incensed at the ill treatment Sophia had to suffer at the hands of her husband in her loveless match. Reading about her plight certainly made me realize the injustice women had to live through in the past. It was perfectly clear that she had to turn to someone else for comfort and company or she might go bonkers.
This book is a change from Ms Feather's usual European settings. It's worth reading as it is lush and excellently written. I also like it because Sophia was able to triumph over adversity to achieve happiness with her beloved. Of course, it helped that the hero Adam was handsome, loving and fiercely protective. Furthermore, it really tugs at your heartstrings. What more can you ask for?
