Summary: THE WORLD NEEDS MORE LIKE TOREY HAYDEN!
Comment: Kevin was extremely fortunate to have someone as dogged, dedicated and determined as Torey Hayden enter his life. The holocaust of his past would hurt even the most stalwart person and it is truly refreshing to know that there are folks out there who will make that extra effort to improve somebody's life. Ms. Hayden's "Little Sister" Charity's inclusion in the story added a much needed and enriching element. I think they ended up balancing one another well. It is with great pride that I can honestly say I have read each one of Ms. Hayden's books (except for her novel, "The Mechanical Cat." if anybody can tell me where to find it, I'd really appreciate that). more than once and am able to quote whole passages by memory. I am eagerly anticipating her next book. I dearly hope to one day meet this remarkable human being. Torey Hayden has changed the world and the lives of countless people for the better.

Summary: The most moving book I have ever read in my life.
Comment: Murphy's Boy is the most moving book I have ever read in my life. I could not put this book down. It was extremely well-written and very easy to read. As this is a true story it made me think that we have not truly suffered like this child. The world needs more Torey Haydens.

Rating: 3
Summary: Disappointing
Comment: "If that wasn't the portrait of a loser, I didn't know what would be" (17). This statement comes at the end of a twenty-nine line paragraph describing Kevin Richter's case history. After just hearing Hayden outline the difficulties this boy has been through, I was a little angry at this sentence. After reading all of Dave Pelzer's books as well as many of Beatrice Spark's, her choice of words seems inappropriate. Although the entire book does not contain this negativity, I couldn't forget it as I turned each page. Borrow this one from the library.
