Rating: 1
Summary: Response to "Just a Question"
Comment: HELLO ... as a follow-up to the "JUST A QUESTION /
JUST WONDERING" inquiry (from GA -- March 16, 2004),
please note that this African-American woman can only
say "THANK YOU" to the person who made this inquiry !!!!
As the author of the review, entitled "Don't let the Cover
Pictures or the Subtitle Fool You !!!!", has hopefully proven ---
IF A REVIEWER IS NOT AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN,
THE REALITY OF THE SITUATION IS THAT THEY
ARE REALLY IN NO POSITION WHATSOEVER TO
ASSUME (OR ESPECIALLY DARE STATE) WHETHER
ANY BOOK, PRODUCT OR ITEM WOULD WORK OR
WOULD NOT WORK FOR THE EXTREMELY WIDE
VARIETY OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN HAIR TEXTURES.
In fact, as the author of the "JUST A QUESTION /
JUST WONDERING" inquiry implies, it is actually
quite arrogant, in general, for anyone to ASSUME
that one would know what would or would not work
well for someone else's hair texture --- if one
does not actually have or daily handle any of the
wide variety of ranges of that particular hair texture.
The author of the ""Don't let the Cover Pictures or the
Subtitle Fool You !!!!" review, has, hopefully, proven that
it was absolutely necessary to let both the potential buyers
AND the earlier reviewers know that these earlier (non-African-
American) reviewers HAVE NO IDEA about which they are speaking.
These earlier reviewers had some amount of gall to make such
untrue and assumption-based statements as: "Dickey's
book is generally for African American women only"
In addition, such untrue, nonsensical, and baseless
statements seem to imply that these women are under
the impression that just because something did not
work well for their hair -- it should naturally and
simply be carelessly tossed-off to the African-Americans.
Such assumptions are not only offensive -- but they
are borderline (if not, out-and-out) racist as well.
Contrary to popular myth --- there are actually many,
many, many, many, many textures of African-American hair.
Actually, the African-Americans have the
widest variety of hair textures in the world.
In fact, there are more than thirty-four (34) varieties
of 'natural-textured' African-American hair --> ranging
from extremely-tightly-curled to completely-straight <--
(as per the book "All about Hair Care for the Black Woman"
by Naomi Sims) AND each of these wide variety of African-
American hair textures are both absolutely beautiful and,
perhaps more important, extremely delicate and need to
be handled only with the best of care and respect.
It is offensive to African-Americans to read reviews
by non-African-Americans which essentially seem to
be stating the following mindset from the reviewers:
"Well, this doesn't work for me so I will recommended
that it be passed off to the African-Americans.
This recommendation will be BASED ON NOTHING MORE
THAN IGNORANCE, STEROTYPE AND ASSUMPTION.
And best of all, I will let the whole world
know of my arrogance-based assumption by
broadcasting it on an international website."
FINAL REQUEST TO REVIEWERS:
Please, please, please -- by all means -- THINK about what
you are assuming and stating BEFORE you decide simply
ASSIGN something to someone to whom it may not belong.
For example, wrongfully assigning - based on assumption
rather than facts -- African-Americans as being the appropriate
'target market' for this book ... because, as it has been proven
in the "Don't let the Cover Pictures or the Subtitle Fool
you !!!!" review, this book clearly IS, IN REALITY, NOT TRULY
AT ALL HELPFUL OR APPLICABLE TO AFRICAN-AMERICANS.
"THANK YOU" again to the "Just a question / Just
Wondering" reviewer from GA - (March 16, 2004,)
for their extremely insightful inquiry.
