Summary: Eloquent space opera with a dash of cyber.
Comment: Delany, considered by many to be the most complex and original sci-fi author out there, shines in this book. Nova is probably Delany's most mainstream work, meaning that he cranked the intellect and dialect dial down just a tad so us mortals can just enjoy a fun book for once. And Nova delivers. The story centers around a the haunted captain of the Roc (a ship) that is on a quest for the equivalent of his Holy Grail. Along the way he recruits arguably the most interesting ensemble cast of supporting characters I've ever encountered. The search takes the crew to many strange places and situations. I'm amazed at how much Delany can pack into such a short novel, quite amazing and something that modern sci-fi authors seem unable to do unless they have 700+ pages to work with.
Delany offers many innovative ideas in Nova, probably the most important being the pre-cursor to the cyberpunk movement. Man-machine interfaces abound in Delany's books, a decade or more before William Gibson ever wrote or thought of Neuromancer. It's a shame this book is out of print, but you can easily find it at any used book store. Do yourself a favor and pick up some of the classics of bygone days...this being one of them in my opinion.

Summary: I've read it again and again
Comment: My mother gave me Nova when I was 15 - I couldn't get beyond the first few pages. It's 20 years later, and I guess I've read it dozens of times, each time experiencing new layers of meaning, watching the layers and richness of the novel unfold as my experiences in life unfold with it.
I am not a big SF fan, maybe one book a year. There's something extraordinary - almost Shakespearean - in Delany's ability to capture fundamentals of how we function and think as humans. The story, the worlds, the technology of Nova mean little to me. It's what I learn about myself through the characters that bring me back to this amazing novel time and again.
I never know what I will encounter when I reread Nova. And I never know if I will reread it days from now, or years from now. I do know that wherever I am in my life, I will find something new. Thank you Mr. Delany, you have made a difference in my life.

Summary: Great book
Comment: I have read other books by Delany (Triton, The Einstein Intersection, The Jewels of Aptor, and They Fly At Çiron), but I have to say that Nova is my favorite out of all of them. The book contains a wide variety of characters and together they form a fun troupe. The plot is interesting, and the details are quirky. It's a quick read, also. I think I finished it in 2 or 3 days.
So read it!
