Summary: Interesting perspective-not exactly a page turner though
Comment: Disarming Iraq by Hans Blix provides some interesting insights into the Iraqi WMD debate from the man in the vortex of that pre-war debate.
As one would suspect from a book written by a scientist cum international bureaucrat, the text is somewhat turgid and at times it takes a bit of slogging to get through the text.
That being said, the book is pretty interesting. The major thing that strikes one, especially given the post-war realization that WMD's weren't in Iraq, is Blix's pre-war conviction, based more on a gut feeling rather than any special insight, data or analysis, that WMD's probably did exist in some significant concentrations.
The other interesting conclusion of the book is Mr. Blix's assertion that the fault for the conflict rests, basically, with Saddam Hussein. Granted, Mr. Blix does have some very pointed, and not very complimentary remarks to make about the positions and actions of Mr. Bush and Mr. Blair. He definitely feels that the inspection process should have been accorded more time to do its work and is pretty critical of some of the timelines the Americans and British placed upon the process. On the other hand, he explicitly points to the fact that the Iraqi regime never, at any time, lived up to either the letter or the spirit of UN resolution 1441. He also agrees that, once the military buildup had reached a critical mass having it simple sit in lace indefinitely was not a viable option for anyone. The 1441 resolution was unanimous, the force was present, the decision to comply or defy rested with Saddam. It was, in effect, says Mr. Blix, Saddam' own obduracy that, in the end, did him in.
In the end what Mr. Blix communicates is an overwhelming sense of frustration. He truly believes that, given a reasonable continuation of proximate implied force and sufficient time, the inspection regime would have worked. The fundamental question, which Blix can present but not answer, is whether, in the final analysis, WMD's were the reason or the pretext for the war. If the former, his argument for more time is persuasive. If the latter, it's irrelevant, as any of a slew of other pretexts could have-and would have-- been concocted by the Americans and British to justify invading.
I doubt this book will change many minds--those who opposed the war will find fodder for their cause. UN haters will simply see evidence of the anti-US bias they always see at the UN. However, for the objective reader--if there are any out there--this is a uniquely informative read.

Summary: Clear and Factual
Comment: An excellect recounting of the inspection process by the man who was there with no apparent bias. Makes very clear the problem he had with all of the political factions pushing for a particular outcome.

Summary: I'm Hans Blixxx, Friend to Nazis, Terrorists & Old Europe.
Comment: Hello pals (by pals I mean the liberal haters of America, democracy and capitalism, whose agenda I aid and abet...tee hee),
I'm Hans Blixxx, also known as the four-eyed, irrecoverably senile, half-blind mole that the incompetent and indifferent UN dictatorially appointed to search for my master Saddam's Wmds! Of course, since I was in league with Uncle Saddam for the better part of ALL the twelve years where he was defiantly trespassing against UN resolution after resolution to disarm and fully disclose by mocking my creampuff employer's (UN) impotence to enforce said resolutions, I obediently and gullibly LET MY Supreme Master Saddam pretend to fairly let my myopic team of "inspectors" bumble from one location to the next--even though it was CLEAR that terrorist-sponsoring dictators like my Godfather Saddam wouldn't play fair, nor could be trusted. Sadly, (or advantageously from my standpoint!!!) all the liberal advocators of Castro, NK, and Chavez LOVED to give my Sugar Daddy Saddam all the benefits of the doubt in the world!
After being overruled--and rightly so, because I now recognize that I deserve the scolding of America and Britain for my undutifulness--by the States and its FIFTY coalition partners, I, Blixxx, have tried in vain to combat the corrosively stinging blow to my Old-Europe-ego that the States whupped on my a$$. Still feeling the red-faced shame of having my elitist, liberal shortsightedness overruled--and also because as a liberal, I can never be expected to atone for my evildoings (right, liberals???)--I now devote EVERY SINGLE WAKING MOMENT to slanderously disparaging Bush & Blair, that it's become like a sick-in-the-head mantra for me that I can't recover from. It's kind of like the psycho Democrats' unreasonably repulsive fixation with Bush, like Kennedy, Kerry, Feinstein, Pelosi and Daschle have...those Red Diaper Doper Babies, tee hee!
Now, I spend my porno-watching, alcoholic, rock-bottom, suicide-contemplating, wash-out life giving "interviews" (really bestially venomous hate speeches against Bush and Blair...tee hee) to the most hazardously destabilizing forces in Western society--namely psycho Kommie papers like Britain's Guardian and Independent!!!!!! Can't wait for the New York or L.A. Times to contact me next to fabricat--I mean, to conduct, ahem, ahem, CONDUCT an "interview"! All that's left for me now, as a jealously disproved liberal dictator-shielder, is to help the Guardian's and Independent's hardened, zealous, anti-American blame crusade that they prejudicially possessed before the war anyhow. Wherever I go, whatever I say, all that keeps me from committing suicide is to scandalously tarnish Bush and Blair to every psycho, left-wing, disenfranchised lunatic fringe paper out there. Basically, whoever's left to listen to my insane, fundamentalist ramblings about America, that GREAT SATAN!!!
Honestly, liberals, don't tread down the same path that I, the Blixxx-man, did in partially persecuting America and its credibility for the war. It'll decay you from the inside out! Look at my sad shell of a life now: I GOT FIRED FROM MY JOB, the only way I can "earn" is to lowly exploit the severely biased distortion of facts that I partook in to shield my Nana Saddam, I can't EVER be vindicated for my tyrannically biased animosity against America's Iraq intervention because, although there haven't YET been Wmds located, I myself was NEVER able to rule their existence out completely due to me being a myopic RETARD, and, finally, my believability is damaged beyond hope.
Signed,
Yours Truly,
Hans the "defrauding, conforming, Uncle Saddam-pacifying, apologetically dovish, UN-subserving, not-containing PATSY" Blixxx
Hugs & Kisses to ALL my perilously liberal, third-world-regime-hawking, Communist-defending, Capitalist-cursing, freedom-disgracing, politically correct, feminist, minority-coddling, "civil liberties"-defending, national security-endangering, Palestinian-sympathizing, "internationalist" Democrats out there! XOXO
