Summary: Insightful and Entertaining
Comment: Jonathan Kellerman continues his successful Alex Delaware series with this story of self-forgiveness and redemption. Ten years ago Alex treated a precocious and defiant 15 year old who dropped out of treatment after a couple of sessions. She returned six years later after Alex had seen her acting as the main event at a bachelor's party and confronted him with what he saw. His need to expiate his feelings of guilt and shame served as the prime motivation to find out what happenned to her when she turns up missing four years later. What follows is vintage Kellerman: the psychological insights, the complex, thought-provoking plot, and the ability to delineate characters with description, dialogue and behavior. Kellerman's training as a psychologist gives Alex Delaware an educated perspective and insight of the world and characters with which he lives. His interview technique is skillful and artistic and after he speaks with an important character Alex offers analysis and description of the character's personality traits.
FLESH AND BLOOD is one of Kellerman's best. At times it is erotic, educational and suspenseful, but is always entertaining and satisfying. Highly Recommended !!!

Summary: Another Disappointment from Kellerman
Comment: This will be the last review, or reading, of Kellerman's work. In the years I've been reading the Alex Delaware series, it seems that the author peaked at book two, and continued his downward descent ever since. Though there have been some incredible highlights here and there, for the most part I don't buy the hype that is Kellerman's media marketing.
In "Flesh and Blood", I found myself trudging through the emotionally devoid writing, trying hard to find something likable about the paper cutout characters and weak storytelling...to no avail. It appeared that somewhere along the line, Kellerman lost his passion for writing, and continues to do so only to meet his contract requirements with the publisher, or else compete with his wife, novelist Faye Kellerman. It's as if Kellerman, himself a psychologist, writes an analytical report of what a book SHOULD look like, then tweaks a few areas and submits the results as a novel. I find it impossible to care about his relationship with Robin, who would be better off hooking up with gay Detective Milo Sturgis. At least there she'd find something akin to the passion that Delaware/Kellerman sorely lack. The plots have become replications of every other plot in the series, with no new twists or turns...perhaps Kellerman is banking on familiarity, and therefore afraid to break new ground with new material.
For the first time, I count myself as not one of an author's avid fans, but a strong dissenter. My suggestion would be for Kellerman to try writing something else, or give up altogether.

Summary: A Chilling Psychological Thriller
Comment: Dr. Delaware is contacted by the mother of Lauren Teague, a girl, he had seen years earlier for a couple sessions as a teenager. Lauren has disappeared and her mother is concerned. Alex remembers the girl well. Not only did see her as a teenager, he saw her years later at a bachelor party where she was a stripper. Both found themselves a little shamefaced. Later she'd gone by his office and told him that she was now studying psychology herself and was paying her way through school by stripping. Conversation turned to her family and after a heated discussion, she stormed out of his office.
Alex doesn't find Lauren for her mother, the police do as she turns up dead, the victim of a gangland-style killing. How did Lauren's body end up in a dumpster, apparently murdered execution style? As Alex and Milo begin to investigate, they find themselves led into the underworld of the sex industry, where nothing is what it seems. It seems like Lauren's death is tied with the brutal deaths of some of her former friends, work associates. To say nothing of the mysterious disappearance of her ex-roommate.
Once again Jonathon Kellerman has written a chilling psychological thriller with a story that winds through the world of prostitution, psychological experimentation and big money. He is one of the best storytellers around today. He puts believable dialogue into the mouths of believable characters, he delivers non-stop suspense and usually, as with "Flesh and Blood", he gives you more twists and turns than a curvy mountain road. You won't be able to put this one down.
