Summary: A Superb Modern Translation Of A Timeless Classic
Comment: Though I love classic literature, I claim none of the pretentiousness of many of the new breed of literati that I have encountered in my life. When I read poetry or prose, whether it be modern or classic, I like to actually UNDERSTAND what I'm reading without spending an hour translating and understanding that which enters my brain. In "The Inferno of Dante: A New Verse Translation," Robert Pinsky does an outstanding job of taking this classic of European literature and making it accessible to not just the person with a PhD in literature, but also to the ordinary man who appreciates a story. I have no problem in recommending this book to anyone with even a passing interest in Dante Alighieri, 14th century Italian poetry, or the seven levels oh Hell.

Summary: Dante's passion, grace and fire is captured
Comment: Mr. Pinsky's translation of The Inferno is a masterpiece. Most English translations of foreign-language poetry capture the literal sense of the poem but lose much of the liguistic magic of the original work. I have read recent translations of the works of Fernando Pessoa and Pablo Neruda and I have been amazed at how much of the original beauty is lost in translation. Mr. Pinsky succeeds at the near impossible but creating a translation that captures the poetry, beauty, horror and humor of the original. He does so by developing a credible English equivalent of Dante's terza rima structure. This is a poem that not only captures the themes of the original but the power of its language. His beautiful translation is meant to be read aloud and does great justice to the original. Now if we could only get Mr. Pinsky to take on Pessoa.

Summary: Good translation of a great classic
Comment: I first read the Inferno in high school and after several years, wanted to read it again and I am glad I did. Pinsky's translation is very well executed and he does a wonderful job at bringing the terza rima into English. (His introduction explains just how difficult this is when translating from Italian into English)
A great, dark classic, with a singular pathos that I have yet to see any literary (or cinematic) work surpass.
