Summary: A timeless fantasy !
Comment: I read The Belgariad over 10 years ago and has just finished reading the series the second time. I find myself enjoying it even more. The story maybe too familiar, good versus evil with a happy ending but I have a weakness for this kind of story. The strength of the series is the development of the wonderful characters, the smooth plot and of course the dry humour. The Belgariad is simply a timeless fantasy to be treasured.

Summary: Eddings gives a wide range of characters to love and hate.
Comment: I love almost all of the Eddings books. The Belgariad series was my first and I followed into the Mallorean and then to The Elenium and Tamule series. The Eddings' supply you with so many wonderful characters to love and hate. Each character has a life of its own and you become part of a close knit community of characters. There are no "perfect" people, everyone has good and bad qualities just like real people. Silk, one of the most charming heroes is also a thief, liar, spy and sometimes killer. These books are well worth the time, money and effort to read.

Summary: The End of a Great Beginning
Comment: The Belgariad, and specifically these last two instalments of the series are the end of a great beginning to the fantasy of David and Leigh Eddings. Garion's quest reaches it's climax and all the pieces of the prophecy come together like a well woven tapestry. The story may be conventional. It follows the quest archetype very well. However the characters are fantastically developed. The Eddings make them real, and that makes it easy to be more concerned about what happens to them. The writing is excellent in my opinion, and the plot is tightly woven. I will say however that Eddings seems to improve every time he goes back to a set of characters, and I highly recomend the Mallorean after you finish the Belgariad. In my oppinion Eddings just keeps getting better.
