Summary: Ho, ho, bubba...
Comment: I absolutely love the writing of HST. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is, without a doubt, one of the most important books of the 20th century. On the Campaign Trail '72 somehow managed to get me interested in politics. Hell's Angels made me want to buy a motorcycle and rip down the california coast at midnight. But...Better than Sex is a dull, vapid, anorexic account of a dull, vapid, anorexic campaign. Approximately half of the 240 page book is made up of scribbled-out faxes and strange illustrations. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I would much rather read 240 pages of non-stop HST ranting. For whatever reason, the Dr. has elected to use the phrases "Ho, ho" and "bubba" at least once on every page, or so it seems. I've read other reviews that state that HST has lost his edge, that a lifetime of rum, cocaine, mescaline and adrenochrome has begun to catch up with him, but I hesitate to write Him off as a aging has-been quite yet. But after reading "The Proud Highway", one must wonder how HST himself would have reacted to a book such as "Better than Sex" if he were still a money-hungry book reviewer.

Summary: Sex is better
Comment: I just can't hate HST.
I admit that writing about politics is hard to follow and sometimes I had to look up who the hell he was talking about.
It's good b/c while reading I am also learning from HST. I just can't get enough of his writing and cut and paste style photo ops. My favorite in this book is when he interviews Bill Clinton and Bubba attacks him with a plate of fries. HST is making Politics fun this time around.

Summary: Boring Race for the Election, Futile Attempt
Comment: I was in college during the Clinton/Bush campaign of '92. I was rash and following the economic collapse of the Mid-west following the Reagan years was ready to vote for anyone but Bush. I was interested in the campaign and the book brought back many memories from my studies of it at the time. It also reminded me how little actually happened. This is where the book is untimetly doomed. HST tries his best to inflect some humor, charisma, and turmoil into the electoral process but in this case there is just too little to mine. The first true "Anti-election" also spawned the first very average HST book.
