Summary: Inspiring
Comment: I was first exposed to the book Dragonflight at the tender age of 5 - yes that's right, unlike most five year olds who had bedtime stories such as Snow White etc, I got Dragonflight (and Lord of the Rings I may add). And that is what started my fascination with Anne McCaffrey's world of Pern.

As a young, impressionable 5 year old, I have no doubt that the intelligent, resourceful female characters depicted in Ms McCaffrey's novels formed extremely inspiring role models and was probably one of the reasons my mother read these kind of books to me (another one being a book called "The Practical Princess") - that and because she herself was "hooked" on them and with me, found an excuse to read them!!

Of course the fantastic DRAGONS contributed to my interest and love of the books - who wouldn't be fascinated with these huge majestic beasts, and who wouldn't want one for a friend and companion, who empathizes your every thought and feeling. And of course the equally resourceful, charismatic and wonderful hero's of the stories should also be given a significant amount of credit.

As an adult I still love reading Ms McCaffrey's books, and have red and collected all published Pern books and just about all of her other series. I still have the tattered, worn Dragonflight book my mother first read to me some 20 odd years ago - taking pride of place in my collection.

Lessa's raise from kitchen drudge to Queen Dragonrider and the hope of Pern (and F'lars plans for the future) takes readers on a fascinating journey to a new planet where you become acquainted with interesting characters and the awesome DRAGONS for which Ms McCaffrey is so famous for creating.

Dragonflight is a great starting point for people wanting to read Ms McCaffrey's books or any si-fi book for that matter.

Ms McCaffrey's books are moving, inspiring, exciting, romantic, suspenseful and down right enjoyable! I can happily admit that I have laughed, cried and triumphed with the characters of Ms McCaffrey's worlds.

Dragonflight and any of Ms McCaffrey's novels are easy to "get into" and hard to put down - requiring almost no effort to read - they simply flow. They are great for young, old, male and female. They are most definitely not predictable, or boring in any shape or form. There are not many authors who have managed to keep me glued to the pages series after series after series.

Indeed there are not many books I would read more than once, however Dragonflight I have read a number of times.

I hope Ms McCaffrey keeps on writing, because I will keep on reading and eagerly await the new releases.

Summary: Perfect for early teens
Comment: I read science fiction voraciously when I was a kid (still do as an adult. :)) and this novel's one of my all-time favorites. McCaffrey creates a living world filled with history, and truly heroic characters driven by a passion to not only survive, but to thrive.

Lessa is one of the strongest women in science fiction, and F'lar's the sort of man teenaged boys want to grow up to be. Together they form a strong, dynamic couple that shows what relationships can and should be like.

And then there's the dragons.

They are simply awe-inspiring, and its impossible to read this book -- or its successors -- without wishing that some how, some way, you could have one. Their like draconic Labrador Retrievers, filled with love, admiration and more than a little stubborness.

The book's immediate sequels -- Dragonquest and The White Dragon -- are equally good, but I've been disappointed by most of the other books in the series. With the exception of Dragondawn, they just don't seem to have the same passion as the earlier books.

If you know pre-teens or early teens who're into science fiction or fantasy, do them a favor and buy them this book!

Summary: A Satisfyingly Rational Approach to Flying Dragons
Comment: Anne McCaffrey walks the blurry line between science fiction and fantasy in this pleasing tale of men, dragons, time travel, and natural catastrophe on a faraway planet.

Leesa is an undistinguished servant girl in her home town when the dragon rider F'lar arrives. He recognizes her considerable natural gifts, and takes her home to be queen of Brenden Weyr. Unlike most of the inhabitants of the planet Pern, F'lar and Leesa believe the ancient ballads that foretell the coming of the Threads - a calamitous rain of death that comes from the sky every 200 years. It having been almost 400 years since the last attack, most people believe that the Threads have ceased, or are mere legends that never happened at all, and that the elaborate ongoing defensive preparations are mere idle rituals of the distant past, which more and more are being abandoned. Can Leesa and F'lar convince the people of the error of their ways, and fight off the coming attack of the all-consuming Threads?

The whole argument about sci-fi vs. fantasy is probably not that important, although it can be interesting, and this book makes for a good test case. McCaffrey has done an excellent job of using the tropes of fantasy: an armored warrior class, their daring and headstrong Queen, fire-breathing dragons, a medieval social structure, age-old prophecies, etc..., and giving them just enough historical and scientific background to make them credible. It seems a little too much to call this science fiction - the scientific explanations given are rarely more than a sentence or two, and they in no way dominate the story; but at the same time the very fact that there are explanations puts this book beyond the realm of garden-variety fantasy. There's no magic at work here - this story takes place in a logical universe where everything that happens does so for a reason.

McCaffrey's prose is sometimes a touch awkward, especially towards the beginning of the book, but it's still much easier reading than Tolkien or Cherryh, and the length is not intimidating, although there is a whole series of sequels available to those who want more (and many surely will). This novel is an excellent selection for teens, particularly young women, who may find Leesa easier to identify with than the standard fantasy hero. For them, this should be considered a 5-star selection.
