Summary: A key book in this awsome series....
Comment: If you up on your Greek Mythology, then perhaps you have heard of the 3 fates; Clotho who spins the threads of life, Lachesis, who measures the threads of life and Atropos, who cuts the threads of life. Piers Anthony incorporates this with a vey clever twist in this "office" as one of the incarnatins of Immortality.
The Protagonist in this Book is Niobe. I consider her truly the most important charater of the whole series. She is the Mother
of the soon to be Mother nature (Orb in Bk 5), the grandmother of Luna (Dating the Incarnation of death and play the pivital role in bk 7). She is also related to Orlene, to be a key incarnation in book 7.
Satan and her go at it pretty hard in his Novel. Niobe has a pesonal grugde with Satan and Satan doesn't care for her....but her daughther in book 5 and 6..well that is a different review.
Niobe also gets to be the Incarnation of Fate twice. Once as the beautiful Clotho in her youth. (After having Luna). Then she steps down after a few decades still young and has another child(orb). As an incarnation. One doesn't age. When Niobe assumes the second aspect (Lachesis) she is in her forties. As Lachesis, her and Satan really rumble.
This is a pivital book because it helps clarify topic from the first 2 books and sets ups events for the rest of the series. Great read

Summary: Best in series
Comment: This book was my fav. in the series. It centers on 1 aspect of fate (there are 3) and follows her through her life. This book was, in my opinion, the most important book in the series, as it introduced a ton of vital characters and gave good background for much of the rest of the series. I wont give away plot, i will just say if you are a fan of Anthony or of the series pick up this book....you wont regret it.
Rating: 4
Summary: With the exception of the ending. . .
Comment: . . .this is a much stronger effort in the "Incarnations of Immortality" series than "Bearing an Hourglass".
While the first volume of this series involved Death, and the second Time, this volume turns to Fate -- in all three of her traditional aspects. Like the previous volume, the stage is set rather well in the opening chapters. Unlike the previous volume, the novel continues well! Of particular note: the relationship of the three women who share the single body of Fate; the recognized voluntary "temporariness" of their several assignments; the role that Fate has to play with relation to Free-Will (a concept Anthony seems to accept); and (on a rather humorous note) the visit of Fate and Nature to a temporary "hell" constructed for the sole purpose of convincing humanity that hell is, after all, a pretty nifty place. (The women were not fooled!)
The greatest weakness? The final battle between Fate and Satan. Totally unconvincing, even for fantasy.
Nevertheless, like "On a Pale Horse", this novel should be read by seminary students to give them fresh perspectives on the difficult questions which people ask in times of crisis.
An outstanding read.
