Summary: I hope Alex Cross is 2nd To Die
Comment: Once again, Patterson delivers an amazing work - this time centered around somebody other than Alex Cross. Now I am by no means an "Alex Cross hater," but I do think he has served his purpose (and as an aside, Alex Cross DOES NOT EQUAL Morgan Freeman). The perfect replacement is THE MURDER CLUB headed up by a GREAT new protagonist - Lindsey! This novel has all of the elements we have grown to love and cherish from Patterson- The short chapters, the twists and turns and the constant excitement make this book a thrilling read. . . .
The tale unfolds with a startling series of developments- a murderer is on the loose and killing brides and grooms. It is difficult to imagine a more gut-wrenching series of crimes. Lindsey (and Raleigh- her new partner) enter the scene. As the plot develops, we grow to feel Lindsey's every emotion. The pain due to a sudden illness, her love for her new man and her frustration as she desperately works to solve the hideous crimes. She eventually forms the murder club with Cindy (reporter) and Claire (simple version of Cornwell's M.E. Scarpetta), who provide assistance as they seek out the killer. The prosecutor rounds out the group of four, but her character is not developed as well. (She may make a "good mortality" - euphemism - in a future book as it is likely readers won't get too attached.) The group eventually works together to reach this book's surprise ending. I won't give it away, but you will not be disappointed!
In summary, just when I thought I was through with Patterson, this book puts him back at the top of my list- No flying bird-girls or Alex Cross to deal with (although to be honest, I am a bit curious about how Patterson intends to continue Roses are Red - here's a tip James: No more lame love interests for Cross). Lindsey and Company are the greatest!

Summary: GOOD, SOLID MYSTERY
Comment: In 1st TO DIE, author James Patterson unites four unlikely women - a homicide inspector, a coroner, a newspaper reporter and a prosecutor - into a unique friendship and the formation of the "Women's Murder Club." Because of their respective jobs, they each investigate on their own, then combine information to solve cases that the police alone cannot.
This case involves a sadistic killer who murders newlyweds, leaves clues and takes souvenirs. The murder scenes are described in graphic detail. The case is solved fairly easily, but just when the reader is thinking that it was too easy, and not enough suspense, Patterson opens a whole other venue of mystery and suspense.
There are also health issues with the main character and a beautiful love story going on in the backgroud.
The only unbelievable part of this book was how fast the women developed friendships and how trusting they were of each other's loyalty to their group. In reality, women tend to be more proprietary and suspicious of each other, particularly when their fields are competitive.
I hope that 1st TO DIE is the first in a series with the Women's Murder Club. That will allow the author to develop the heroines more, as he did with the Alex Cross series.

Summary: it started good but ended really badly
Comment: James Patterson's take on women detectives started out OK, with a nice structure, revealing the killer on the 1st chapter, so you feel you're reading a whydunit. Things are made more interesting by the appearance of a very likely suspect. However, logic and plausability were thrown out the window by the time the resolution came in. It's as if Patterson was thinking "what more incredulous coincidences can I come up with?". Also, do we really need that epilogue? Isn't better just to leave things hanging quite a bit so as the reader can have something to think about? But no, Patterson (or his editor) chose to dumb down an otherwise OK book with that unnecessary epilogue.
