Summary: Loved it- D.W. has a vocab well beyond her years
Comment: I find all the "D.W." books hilarious- she speaks with authority in such an adult manner sometimes, I have to chuckle to myself. D.W. and her family go to the beach, but she refuses to go in the water- or even take off her robe and hat. "I don't want to get sunburned", she says, looking, in her robe and huge floppy hat, like Katherine Hepburn trying to remain anonymous, "and I don't want to get wet!", she says. She whines the whole day with the familar refrain "Is is time to go yet?!?", but her family is determined to have fun. Finally, Arhtur tricks her into going in the water and, of course, D.W. realizes she loves it so much, she wants to come back the next day. A fun read, especially for any child that is apprehensive about the beach or swimming.

Summary: Summertime Fun
Comment: This is a very nice book. In reading a story about D.W. and her family going to the beach and insisting that she does not like and does not want to get in the water, children learn an important lesson about trying new things. Once D.W. does give the water a try, she finds out she absolutely loves it. My favorite part of the book elaborates on what D.W. does in the water: She splashes, she dunks, she dives, she jumps, etc. The actual words in the story are much more lush and colorful, however. It's a book you can have a lot of fun reading aloud to and with children. It's also a nice introduction to talking with children not only about the beach, but also the importance of not being afraid of or too stubborn to try something new. A definite recommendation for young children learning to read.
