Summary: Maeterlinck's Life and Work
Comment: Halls' book came out in 1962 and remains the only general survey of the whole of Maeterlinck's life and work in English. Based on archival research, it is solidly informative and contains important information not available elsewhere (for example, the date of composition of those plays of Maeterlinck where the date of publication is misleading). It scarcely solves the mystery of Maeterlinck's elusive personality, and as literary criticism it is pedestrian (the collective volume edited by hanse adn Vivier that came out in the same way is far superior from this point of view). But Halls' work is still an important book.
