Summary: An All American Tale
Comment: this is one of six or seven books in my lifetime that I have sat and read in one sitting. Thank you Mr. Littell for this heartfelt tale of two American's freindship. To have seen his friend ravaged by the press over the years must have been hard for the author. Without writing a valentine, Mr. Littell is clearly a loyal freind, and I commend this honorable effort. The stories stand alone for the most part, and this book would have been almost as much fun if it was about John Doe and his college roomate. A classic American tale by any definition.
Rating: 1
Summary: MEMOIRS OF A PATHETIC WANNABE
Comment: This slow moving opus is almost unbelievably self serving and exploitative. What does this say about JFK Jr that he had a friend like this in his life? It certainly speaks of a lack of judgement. This fellow Littell is so duplicitous, so essentially unethical and downright seedy, that it suggests that the only reason he WAS friends with Kennedy was to pick up the scraps, forever poised for their eventual falling out and his opportunity to cash in. Of all the vultures who circulate above the Kennedy clan, this guy wins as the most despicable and most pathetic.
Rating: 2
Summary: pointless and self-serving
Comment: I read that Littell has criticized other writers for publishing books about JFK Jr., and now he's come out with his own. He unconvincingly tries to justify his hypocrisy, claiming at one point that Kennedy wanted Littell to write a book about him, but it's easy to put words in the mouth of a dead person. Littell portrays himself as Kennedy's best friend, and they clearly were friend. But because there's no particular reason for this book to exist, you wind up thinking that The Men We Became is more about Robert Littell than John F. Kennedy Jr.
