Comment: I want to help to clear up some of the deceptive reviews on here about the book "Rebel Heart" by Bebe Buell and Victor Bockris. I have read this book from cover to cover. It is really an accurate account of the golden age of the rock star and the rock star girlfriend/wife. Told with humor and honesty. Here are two often misguided accounts that I have spotted and corrected.
1)Bebe Buell never says in Rebel Heart that the song "Little Red Corvette" is about her. She DOES say that other people did though.
2)She also never claims that any of the material on Elvis Costello's first three records is about her either. She states that "Party Girl" is NOT about her but that most people "thought or assumed" it was.
Upon further investigation into Bebe Buell's history, it is discovered that she is actually very well liked and respected by her peers. I have seen her name in books for decades now. She is part of music history and her insight is fresh and fun.
What I really liked about Rebel Heart was her decency. Even when the chips were down and things are rough she never loses her spirit and hope for a bright future. That shines through in this bio. Her respect for the people in her life, even when it is a bumpy patch, is inspiring.
As a former touring musician, I can state with certainty that when I was a young lad the GOAL was to have a girl like Bebe Buell on your arm. She was the fantasy and the first Playmate with a rock star boyfriend. Can you say trailblazer?
She took it a step further and went on to form her own bands. I actually like her music and her voice.
My take on the book is spot on. It is worth the purchase and the reread.

Summary: Rock grrrl at heart- "Rebel Heart" is true blue/buell
Comment: If I didn't know better, I would think that Bebe Buell was from another planet. A better planet than earth. A planet of love and music. A place where everyone is beautiful and no one gets their heart broken. The only thing is, Bebe Buell was brave enough to tell us about the imperfect parts of the rock life. The parts where your heart gets stomped on and where love does not always win or rule. I really appreciated this book for that honesty and because there was a real person behind the pain and rejection. Of course, there are the wonderful stories, all the laughs and giggles, the great photos, the very human mistakes, glamourous people, and most importantly, Bebe herself.
I highly recommend this book to all rocker girls who dream of marrying a rockstar. My advice , run for the hills!! Its not all its cracked up to be for sure. I'm just glad that Bebe survived to tell the tale and relive those fantastic times long passed. Buy the book for the cover alone. It is just fantastic, like Bebe and her terrific story. Rock on, Rebel Heart!

Summary: Still Shining Brightly, A Survivors Tale
Comment: I put Rebel Heart in my list of top ten books I love and reread often when I need advice or a mental lift. It is a great story of a girl from Virginia who at the age of 18 arrives in New York and becomes the toast of the town within weeks of her getting there. A bit of a rebel and non conformist, Bebe kicks up her heels and lives the life of glamour and fashion and rock and roll. She even becomes a Playboy Centerfold at the age of 20, making her the first girlfriend of a rockstar (Todd Rundgren) to do so.
What I love the most about her story is how well she survived such a crazy youth only to become a beautiful and successful woman. She went through hell to get there: survived a horrible marriage, single motherhood, depression, financial difficulties- it is all there. She is not afraid to admit her mistakes and former faults either. I applaud her for that. She danced with her demons and then kicked them too.
If you like happy endings, Rebel Heart has that. Bebe meets her fiance Jim and her relationship with her daughter and key "men" from her past becomes solid and secure. Amends are made all around and her spirit dances with the joy in the final chapter. If you want to see what happened next you will have to wait for "part 2" which I have read is in the works. Overall, her life is that of legend.
Bebe Buell is poised to transcend her past and rise above the pitfalls of her mistakes and become a spokeswoman for all of us over forty and loving it. Now married to her much younger fiance, modeling again, writing three more books, and recording a long anticipated new record- whew!-we have far from heard the last of this remarkable woman. She came back from dispair and carried on in typical "Xena" fashion. Thank god! We need her and more like her to keep the flame burning. Thank you Bebe for making me feel good about getting older and staying beautiful inside and out. AND for never giving up on the future.
